October's Employee Spotlight goes out to Richard Jones, a Class A CDL driver and our milling crew's primary hauler! Richard took a 9-month hiatus to do OTR hauling and returned to become our primary hauler for milling. He has an impeccable driving record, shows up every day on time, and comes to work with a can-do attitude. Thanks for being a great asset to us, Richard!

In Praise of Bravery By Robert Moskowitz Bravery might not tie in directly with productivity and success, but I believe there are important advantages to cultivating a little more bravery than you’ve got right now. I’m not talking about the kind of bravery that leads to fighting dragons, storming beaches, or charging into the teeth of enemy defenses. I’m talking about the kind of bravery that results in you having difficult conversations, addressing your weaknesses, choosing uncertain or unpopular courses of action, honoring long-term commitments that have grown burdensome, and doing what’s right despite incentives to do otherwise. Here are some of the advantages that accrue to those who can demonstrate a little extra bravery: https://lnkd.in/gjTYGjfd

This post will not make me popular. I know this, but I’m going to post it anyway. At 22 years old, the young man in the shared post has the road freight industry at his feet. He’s excited about his job, and his boss has put a lot of faith in him, which is awesome. He’s clearly worthy of such confidence and faith, which is rare in our industry. In short - he’s a diamond. However, if he doesn’t change his lifestyle, he’s not going to be around to fulfil his ambitions 😢 This is NOT a body shaming post. I’m very concerned for his future but I admit I don’t know what he’s eating; or drinking; or whether he’s exercising or not; or whether he has health conditions that cause him to appear, in the only photo I’ve seen of him, to be very overweight. My only concern is that he appears to be not of great health for a 22 year old. This is an amazing young person who has a wonderful future; the opportunity to have a family and maybe his own transport company. But if he doesn’t look after his health, it will be just a dream. A beautiful, tragic dream that isn’t realised. If we don’t start acting and doing something about the health of drivers in our industry, there won’t be an industry to worry about. I know that Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds has done amazing work with bp to offer wonderfully healthy options for drivers; but what happens when they’re not at a bp ? We need to do more. We need to encourage drivers to visit their Doctor every year as an absolute minimum to cover off all the items they should be for a health check. We need drivers to demand healthy options at truck stops, not fried food, regardless of whether it’s a bp or not. We need to promote healthy eating in the same manner as we promote mental health and road safety. Otherwise, people like Nick will become just another statistic of our industry. We need to do better for legends like him 💖
“I don’t think I’m going anywhere," beams young Nick Madden, 22. "I just love my job and I’m excited to go to work and I love what I do.”

Rahmel Wattley - insightful interview with the inspiring business leader John Oren of TUYA Technologies Seven principles and wisdom I heard in the interview: 1) make customers' lives easier (John helped an oil major reduce 2,000 suppliers to only one delivery supplier) 🥇 2) amid success, save money for the rainy days (to help clients and capitalize on down turn acquisitions) 💸 3) share credit... no ego (John asked another leader to come in as CEO after going public) 4) rollups in highlight fragmented industry create value: simply put, economies of scale help reduce costs and improve service 5) think as an owner / operator: invest time and attention, not just money, to make a stable, thriving business. 6) listen to your partner (wife / husband)! "Don't gamble with grocery money" 7) inspiration: be fearless, research the idea, invest the time. "All kinds of good things by living the dream"!
