This morning a report from the World Meteorological Organisation noted that last year global climate records were broken and 2024 could be worse. The impact to nature and the human suffering we are seeing now and will see going forward (at a deepening level and pace) is indescribable. Through our reliance on fossil jet fuel, aviation is contributing to the climate crisis. For Air NZ, climate change is our highest risk. We need to transition to lower carbon operations and we need to transition as quickly as possible. There is no doubt or dispute that any industry or economy has time on their side. Aviation has limited options to decarbonise and we are working hard to get more sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is the main solution available to us at the moment. SAF is not perfect. It still emits CO2 when burnt, albeit with a much better life cycle outcome. Not all SAF is equal and it’s extraordinarily hard to produce. But it is important and we want to help grow this sector in a credible and responsible way. We want to partner with people out there trying to solve aviation’s climate impact problem and we want to drive sustainable change. We are a very small airline but given we service a population at the end of the world (with a natural environment also deteriorating) we’ve got a lot to lose if we don’t decarbonise. In a world first for airlines, Air New Zealand has launched a global open invitation to innovators and start-ups in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector to become a supply partner to the airline. "Air New Zealand plays an essential role in connecting New Zealand's people, tourism, and trade to the world, but we must find a way to do this more sustainably and as quickly as we can. The aviation industry is an integral part of our lives. I know I spend far too much time looking out windows like this and it comes at a cost. Did you know that about 60,000 people in Western Australia work FIFO, and takes on average one flight per week to the Goldfields or Pilbara, contributing to carbon emissions? As we strive towards a carbon-neutral world, we must revolutionize our air transport with synthetic carbon-neutral fuels or make changes to our business models and jet-setting lifestyles. Today, the Norwegian Ministry of Transport, the Mission of Norway to the EU and Green Aviation Norway with founding members Avinor, the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority, SINTEF and the Federation of Norwegian Industries, hosted a seminar on zero emission regional aviation in Brussels. The Norwegian Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Transport, Executive Director Florian Guillermet of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), as well as other key European stakeholders, representatives from Norwegian airport operator Avinor and the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority underscored the importance of coordinated efforts on a European level to drive the transition to zero and low emission regional aviation. A few reflections after the seminar on zero and low emission regional aviation in Brussels on Tuesday: There is political will to make the green transition of aviation happen. The prioritization of 1 bn NOK to aviation in the National Transport Plan is a very positive signal from the government, and a good start. A start, because we, as in the aviation industry and its entire ecosystem, will need more. We need to invest in infrastructure at airports, and we have to secure sufficient energy and sufficient grid capacity. Timing is a crucial. This is not a waiting game. It will take time to get the infrastructure ready. At the same time, we cannot make investment decisions before we have a good overview of what is actually needed; where, when and in what scale. The cooperation between Avinor and the Norwegian CAA to establish Norway as an international test arena is a concrete measure to gain insight into needs and requirements. Through dialogue with the market; airlines, aircraft producers and others, we will make Norwegian airports and airspace available for testing and demonstration of new technologies to bring the transition one step forward. One of the key takeaways from Brussels was that there is a need for coordinated effort on a European level. We need policy makers with stamina to support the transition over time. Currently, there is no viable market for zero and low emission aviation. In order to stimulate the market, there is a need for risk mitigation. Large investments are needed, in infrastructure and technology development, business models nerds to be developed, and the industry cannot carry them all on our own in the transition phase. In our meetings with policy makers, and at seminars and conferences during the last couple of years, we've talked a lot about carrots and sticks, and it boils down to a combination. Policy makers must set and make absolute goals and demands, and support with measures and incentives needs to follow. Norway needs aviation, and the world needs aviation. We've made progress. Zero and low emission technologies are getting ready for testing and demonstration. Policy makers must act as enablers to take this to the next level. And the whole industry must commit to the needed actions. Net zero aviation: the sky’s the limit Britain should be leading the sector towards a more sustainable and prosperous future. “This is where a major opportunity for the UK comes in. Our focus is on accelerating delivery, which is only possible by working with others and the government through bodies like the Jet Zero Council and the Aerospace Technology Institute. By working together, we know the UK can be home to a thriving new SAF industry – supplying most of our aviation fuel demand and much of the 10 per cent SAF that will be mandated in the fuel-mix by 2030. SAF plants in the UK’s industrial heartlands could create ten thousand new jobs by 2030 and billions of pounds for local economies in the Humber, the north-east, Scotland, South Wales and Teesside. But these need the right policy support and we look towards how vehicles like the proposed National Wealth Fund could help drive private investment into these exciting new industries, which will power global aviation for decades to come. The last few years have also seen the first test flights of a passenger plane powered by hydrogen, increasing our confidence in the potential for zero carbon emission flights for shorter journeys too. Much of this progress is down to the hugely positive impact of the Aerospace Technology Institute, funded jointly by industry and government, which gives the UK the edge and is helping make zero-emission flight technology a reality. Some of the other measures to cut emissions – such as modernising our airspace or using more fuel-efficient aircraft – are cutting carbon as we speak, already making a difference. And not just that, a huge amount of work is going on to address the non-CO2 effects of aviation (things like contrails). A lot still needs to be learned about these, but indicators suggest a majority of the effect comes from a minority of flights – with prospects to mitigate the impact through better flight planning using technology to understand atmospheric conditions“ Matthew Gorman #nonCO2 #hydrogen #sustainableaviation
