Spent a rainy Saturday at the Cascade Pacific Council, BSA, #CascadiaDistrict #Camporee, working with scouts on two merit badges: #DisabilitiesAwareness and #CitizenshipInSociety. Alongside Katelynn, and their #ServiceDog, Brittany, we learned about etiquette, #ADA requirements, and differentiating from #EmotionalSupportAnimals and #TherapyAnimals. #CitzSociety merit badge is Scouts BSA's discussion on #DiversityEquityAndInclusion. Using examples from #Scouting, school, and the workplace, we discussed the critical concepts of Equality vs. #Equity. The latest RACE Report data shows that people from ethnically diverse backgrounds are significantly underrepresented in the UK conservation workforce, including within our organisation. We’re committed to making the RSPB somewhere everyone can thrive and live our shared values. Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is embedded in our 2030 strategy and we have invested in our EDI effort in recent years, with good progress including changes to our recruitment practices, new appointments, improving accessibility on reserves, and we voluntarily signed up to the RACE Report to hold ourselves to account. These are important steps in the right direction, but we know there is still so much more we need to do. We are accelerating our action, including setting up a dedicated task force to help us move further and faster towards removing the barriers within our organisation that produce racial disparities. Reporting to the Executive Board, the task force will include the voices of people of colour with assistance from Beyond Differences, our race equity staff and volunteer network, and representatives from different levels right across our organisation. To become more inclusive, we must take more action now. This is an organisational priority, and we will continue to hold ourselves to account. An important update here about the steps we are taking to address equity, diversity and inclusion at the RSPB.     The latest RACE Report shows we have a way to go, and we are determined to be more relevant to the world we’re trying to change.  We can only save nature through people. All people.     We’re continuing our journey towards building an organisation where everyone can thrive, recognising and breaking down the barriers that different communities face to access nature and have a say on how to save it.     To become more inclusive, we must take more action now. I encourage all organisations in the environment sector to sign up to the RACE Report so we can all better understand the situation, and importantly, track and share progress together.
