When children's hands learn about light refraction optics and photonics. I've learned a lot. One of my New Year's resolutions is already complete. We were able to introduce a second grade class in a primary school to the world of #photonics. We employed optical phenomena to teach children about #light, #colors, and #optics. We wanted to introduce the youngsters to these businesses in a fun way. Because photonics and optics are fascinating! Explaining light, demonstrating light refraction with a rainbow, or depicting the color gradient with water did more than just make the children's eyes light up. What did we demonstrate, you ask? Simple optics examples include snowflake reflections. The kids discovered the kaleidoscope or glanced around the corner. Color filters were presented as optical phenomena, and hidden items were studied with magnifying #lenses. The highlight, however, was the light refraction and consequent color gradient. How lovely and colorful "white light" can be. Alexander Telle and I were able to immerse ourselves in our roles as professors/teacher while also promoting young talent. It was a terrific experience - kudos to all of the professors/teachers! OptoNet e.V. came up with the concept. Thank you, Natalja Bajkovski, for the wonderful experiments. Although I knew that optics was practical and important, I never felt I understood optics very well as a Physics undergraduate. Now that I am gearing up to teach a brief introduction to quantum computing and I am working on a data analysis project in Optometry, I felt I should read more about Optics and photons. Material appearance has emerged as a scientific topic in its own right rather recently and an increasing number of professionals concerned by this topic, belonging to various application areas, are entering this vast field. Thanks to the rise of imaging systems and visual rendering software, and the rapid development of accessible devices for color and gloss analysis, non-expert people can now check, for example, the compliance of a product with an appearance standard, or create a realistic virtual prototype. Most of these tools are based on optical concepts which are generally not in the forefront at an elementary level usage, but which are necessary for a consistent analysis of the specific cases studied. The objective of this book is precisely to introduce the fundamental notions of optics allowing the readers to understand the radiometric quantities measured with common devices, to learn how to analyze them, and to review some classical optics-based predictive models for various types of materials and structures. We have chosen to illustrate the theoretical notions with numerous examples and corrected exercises, easily transposable to a variety of materials: glass plates, polymer films, pigment layers, metals, papers and printed surfaces, coatings, etc. The book targets an audience of students, engineers and researchers who have a scientific background but not necessarily versed in optics, who are seeking sound bases in order to characterize the appearance of products and better comprehend the more advanced research currently being conducted in this area. Participating in the #3MT competition was an incredible experience for me. I worked hard to craft a speech that was both accessible and grounded, avoiding overly complex scientific jargon. I'm thrilled to announce that I secured first place in the semi-final of the University of Victoria 3MT competition 2024. In my 3MT presentation, I aimed to convey the concept of utilizing Rb vapor cells to build a control-phase gate useful for quantum computing applications. The idea revolves around utilizing two coherent, phase-locked lasers tuned at 795 nm to address the D1 transition in natural abundance vapor cells, creating an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window. This EIT window opens up access to various fascinating phenomena, notably slow light. By leveraging Kramers-Kronig relations, we can derive the dispersion curve from the absorption profile of the EIT. The extreme dispersion induced by EIT allows us to control the phase of signal light by manipulating the steepness of the dispersion curve with a sharp, narrow feature in the EIT dip. Additionally, we can manipulate the temporal occurrence of the transparency dip by introducing another laser tuned to address the D2 transition, forming what is known as an N-type scheme to break one of the ground states that EIT is based on, known as the AC-stark shift. This shift alters the transparency dip, consequently shifting the dispersion curve, thereby enabling the control of the signal field's phase. The ultimate goal of this approach is to enhance X-phase non-linearity to achieve a giant phase shift, which holds tremendous potential for various quantum computing applications. #TBT: While in college, Richard Coppola, D.Sc. (pictured here in 1983), studied electrical engineering with the hope of someday using it to map the brain. When he came to NIMH in 1970, Dr. Coppola introduced computers to his laboratory, drastically reducing the time needed to do experiments. As the then director of the NIMH Magnetoencephalography Core Facility, he provided NIH researchers with a noninvasive way to study brain function. #BrainWeek #BrainAwarenessWeek

As everyone can see every day, many objects or #materials change their appearance when they get wet. Most of the time, the object becomes more translucent, its color darker and more chromatic. Beyond these general trends, is it possible to predict these changes in appearance for a given type of surface, and for a given humidity level? This is the question studied in this book, by drawing up a first inventory of available knowledge and ongoing research in multiple fields of application: in remote sensing, to correctly identify surfaces and estimate moisture content; in public lighting, to improve visibility on wet roads; in computer graphics, to render wet surfaces in a more realistic way… This book was initiated by the GDR Appamat, a grouping of research focused on material appearance created in 2019 by the French national center for scientific research (CNRS). In 9 chapters, 26 specialists from various disciplines present different approaches that open perspectives on this field of research. Hopefully, students, engineers, and researchers will be inspired by these ideas to propose future developments. ⚡ Researchers at Aalto University, Finland, and Colorado School of Mines, USA, are using LUMI to accelerate the discovery of materials for clean energy and zero-emission vehicles. The opportunity to create a new partnership came through the Finland–Colorado research collaboration call opened by CSC - IT Center for Science. – We will combine Density Functional Theory calculations, deep learning-based interatomic potentials, and molecular dynamics simulations.
