Fewer than 60 multinationals are responsible for more than half of the world’s plastic pollution, with six responsible for a quarter of that, based on the findings of a piece of research. https://lnkd.in/e6PtR5Jm An international team of volunteers collected and surveyed more than 1,870,000 items of plastic waste across 84 countries over five years: the bulk of the rubbish collected was single-use packaging for food, beverage, and tobacco products. The two tobacco companies Altria and Philip Morris International combined made up 2% of the branded plastic litter found, both Danone and Nestlé each produced 3% of it, PepsiCo was responsible for 5% of the discarded packaging, and 11% of branded plastic waste could be traced to the The Coca-Cola Company. Many of these companies have taken voluntary measures to improve their impact on plastic pollution, the experts behind the study argue they are not working. In the past, the discourse on solutions to plastic pollution has largely focused on consumer-based actions and waste management infrastructure instead of #ProducerResponsibility. However, there is a growing realization that #UpstreamActions and producer responsibility initiatives by plastic producers are essential in addressing the problem.. #Phasing out single-use and short-lived plastic products by the largest polluters would greatly #reduce global plastic pollution. Food and beverage companies are disproportionately large polluters. A recently published study by #ScienceAdvances revealed the top five brands globally were Coca-Cola Company (11%), PepsiCo (5%), Nestlé (3%), Danone (3%), and Altria (2%). https://lnkd.in/dBMVBrJ9.

Think before you shop - just 60 companies responsible for half the world's plastic pollution - we need to stop buying plastic - and opt for non plastic options ( and use consumer power to push change) but equally producers and retailers need to be held responsible for this pollution.

A move to tackle plastic products across the United States Federal Government is sending a message to public and private sectors across the world, according to WWF.
