“I’ve put a catch up in for us early next week.” A sentence nobody wants to hear. “Catch ups” at work can mean loads of things. If you’re the one proposing it, it probably just means a casual chat. But to the person you say it to, it can easily cause 👉🏻 Panic 👉🏻 Anxiety 👉🏻 Fear 👉🏻 Insecurity Have I done something wrong? Am I getting fired? Has my slightly inebriated behaviour at last year’s Christmas party finally come back to haunt me? It’s easy to jump to the worst case scenario. At Marvel, we’ve banned meetings with vague titles like “catch up”. Our meetings have clear names, agendas and we make sure everyone knows what’s going to happen before the meeting starts. No panic. No disaster planning. No more terrifying catch ups.

One of the biggest complaints I hear is 'I am in too many meetings'. Which translated means 'I am in too many ineffective meetings that waste my time'. What if you had a simple, free way, that was proven in research to increase engagement, productivity and reduce time, would you do it? I hear 'Hell Yes'. It's simple, I've used it and it has made a difference. At the end of your meeting, go around the table and ask everyone to rate the meeting out of 5, and then if it is not a 5 what would make it the next number up for them i.e. if they rate it a 3, what would make it a 4? What this does is firstly ensures everyone is heard, secondly holds everyone accountable for contributing to improving the meeting. If someone says, which they often do, 'I am not sure of a number but it was a good meeting', don't accept that, I want everyone to commit to rating it otherwise it is a cop out. Use the magic of ‘so…’! It’s the answer to: → What’s going on in people’s minds? → How has your announcement or conversation landed? → How do they feel? What do they think? We are used to conversations going fast. Subject discussed? Check! And on to the next one. But… ⌛️ A pause gives your team time to think. That way, the message or conversation can sink in, and people start sharing their thoughts or conclusions. So… 👀 Using ‘so’ in your efforts to ‘go slow’ is a great way to invite a response after pausing. 💡 The next time you're wrapping up a team meeting, try this: - Take a deep breath - Say “So…” - Pause (tip: Count to 5 or even 10 in your head if you’re unsure about the length of the pause) - … and then listen. See where the conversation goes from there. Or combine it with ‘so, what’s next’… and see what people come up with for some impromptu action-storming. #PositiveExperiments #PowerofPausing

Not sure how to have a difficult conversation? That's not good. And you probably need to have one soon but haven't pulled the trigger yet, huh? It can be intimidating when you need to talk it out with someone, I know. And you could do research on how to do it correctly or with the least amount of fallout or whatever. But you don't have time for all that. So... here's a quick version so you can have 1 more tool in your toolbox before your next big talk. 👉 Step #1 - Schedule it. Just do it. Plan the time so that it happens. 👉 Step #2 - Make sure the person is seated between you and the door. (If your office is opposite and you are between the door and your employee, it can give them the feeling of being trapped or cornered. They need to feel like they have a quick exit.) 👉 Step #3 - Get to the point. Don't him and haw about whatever. Deliver the news quickly and clearly. 👉 Step #4 - Make sure they ask clarifying questions. There are always questions. 👉 Step #5 - Followup with increased support and feedback. This ensures you both remain on the same "team." I understand there are bagillions of variations to difficult conversations. And no, these 5 steps don't cover them all. But if you don't have a good starting spot, this will give you something to work with. Now go out there and work it!

Yes, Your first instinct will be to get all hands on deck to fix things. After all, your revenue and reputation is on the line….  But I'd love to put a different spin on the instinct to immediately go to your glossy PR contact or head to google for a recommendation for external crisis comms. Instead, please ensure you do the right thing, firstly, for your employees, plus your customers and wider stakeholders. And that all starts by communicating clearly & with empathy.  But here are 5 crucial things to consider before launching into fixing the problem:  🐘 How are people in the company feeling? 🐘 How can you create a space where you can ask them and it'll be an honest and productive conversation?  🐘 What are the best ways to communicate more widely? 🐘 How are you going to communicate your next steps? 🐘 How are you going to provide support to employees who need it? Consider these questions (and I mean properly consider them - write down the answers and then take steps to action a way for your workforce to be properly seen and heard.
