Our friends at COSMIIC are seeking researchers and startups interested in adopting a revolutionary implantable device technology. The team will soon launch an open source, modular implantable device platform. The COSMIIC System has an Investigation Device Exemption from the FDA for use in early feasibility human studies and is blazing a path for collaborators to follow. COSMIIC is a The National Institutes of Health SPARC.science funded project, which rings in a new era for the Networked Neuroprosthesis, a device invented at Case Western Reserve University to restore muscular functions that have been lost or damaged due to spinal cord injury. The COSMIIC System comprises multiple components, including an implanted battery, pulse generators, and EMG-recording modules. Additional modules for targeted treatments are currently in development. COSMIIC looks forward to being a major resource enabling the translational neuromodulation world to collect preliminary data, follow established regulatory pathways, and design new experiments and modules with reduced resources required. As we actively wrap the last few months of 2023 and eagerly anticipate 2024, I am thinking deeply about trends in the industry to watch. One I feel strongly about the intersection of #MedTech and #BioTech as we seek higher ground in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of complex diseases. This reminded me of a discussion with Rene van der Merwe, Chief Clinical Officer and Head of Bioelectronics at Galvani Bioelectronics. Galvani is on the forefront of precision neuromodulation, treating conditions of the nervous system with direct nerve stimulation. Galvani is a created partnership between GSK and Verily Life Sciences with goal of leveraging each party's strengths towards better clinical outcomes for patients. The resources and intimacy with the chronic patient are a strength of Big Pharma, while technology, systems and data are complimented in this case by Verily. We expect there to be more cross pollination in the medical device and life science ecosystem as we look forward towards ambitious clinical goals.

Exciting news from MIT! Engineers at MIT have made groundbreaking advancements in drug delivery technology. They have developed a patch that utilizes ultrasound to deliver drugs through the skin. This innovative patch contains piezoelectric transducers, enabling it to efficiently push drugs through the skin. The ability to deliver drugs through the skin opens up a world of possibilities in medical treatment. By bypassing the gastrointestinal tract, transcutaneous drug delivery offers significant advantages over traditional oral delivery methods. The use of ultrasound technology allows the patch to create small pores in the skin, enabling drugs to pass through. This breakthrough has enormous potential, not only for treating superficial conditions but also for reaching deeper layers of the skin and even the bloodstream. Our goal: To address the challenges of manufacturing cell-based products by validating and optimizing the operation of stirred-bioreactors for the production of mesenchymal cells and their extracellular vesicles (EVs).
