Throwback Thursday: Objectified: A Documentary by Gary Hustwit August 2009 A special screening of, Objectified - A Documentary by Gary Hustwit, presented in conjunction with IDSA Los Angeles, with director Gary Hustwit (who also directed Helvetica) there for a discussion. Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It's a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It's about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It's about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. What I'm Reading: The American Scholar, Summer 2024. Published quarterly in Washington, DC, by Phi Beta Kappa, the academic honor society. This is a great example of how to design a text-heavy, journal publication and make it look beautiful, dynamic, and richly-detailed. Design director David Herbick (a colleague of mine way back in the day at Newsweek) uses smart typography, restrained color, elegant white space, and large, striking illustrations to give The American Scholar a vibrant, modern visual voice. I love the logo and cover format, and the dynamic cover illustration by Isabel Espanol, as well as the knockout inside artwork by Matt Rota and Luke Best. The production values and paper stock are superb, and the 7" x 10" smaller format is nifty. Too many journals and text-heavy publications look tired, old fashioned, and just plain fuddy duddy, but The American Scholar has an exciting and forward-looking design that rocks. https://lnkd.in/gXHjvkxH #magazines #magazinedesign #magazinecover #graphicdesign #illustration

Dive into the world of design, where thinking differently becomes a canvas for creative expression. Colors aren't merely visual elements; they wield psychological influence and tell compelling stories. Ever wondered about the theory of colors? It's a fascinating exploration into how different hues evoke emotions and convey messages. From the vibrant energy of red to the calming influence of blue, each color carries a unique narrative. As we craft designs, let's not just pick colors; let's understand their language. Applying color theory elevates our designs, making them intentional and impactful. So, as we venture into the realms of creativity, let's paint with purpose, breaking free from conventions and infusing our designs with the rich palette of thoughtful innovation. #designthinking #colortheory #creativeexpression https://lnkd.in/eRyvsqFG

I am very honoured and pleased to have been invited by the Circle Foundation for the Arts to have an illustration image selected to be featured and for publication in print & online for Spotlight Contemporary Art Magazine, issue 35 along with a short artist statement. Spotlight is a curated digital and printed contemporary art magazine. Each new issue includes invited 80 - 90 artists from around the world working in a variety of media. They focus on telling the story of what art looks like today, through investigating different perspectives and styles. Spotlight has been very well received, with each issue having a projected readership of over 75,000 readers. The digital magazine is published on their website and Issuu where their previous magazines have a bit under 1 million reads. The printed magazine can be ordered directly from their website (A4 size with a full color, gloss 200gr cover and 115gr paper for the inside pages). Here is finalized layout proof sent of how my selected work will look before publication.
