Discover Creative Careers - unexpectedly this got me emotional... 20 years ago I was in Year 11 - still with no real clue what I wanted to do with my life. I was obsessed with music and media. I had this idea of a job I would love...I wanted to be the person who puts music to sports montages, you know, post-match highlights. SO obsessed I was with this, I would create highlight montages of my NHL Ice Hockey game on the PS2, then run the visual AV leads into my VCR, and then split the audio off, and would hook up my HiFi...get it all cued up, and BAM hit record on the VCR. Then watch back at my creations for hours. I had tried a taster day at our local college for Graphic Design, but as we were seated in front of computers with Adobe Photoshop on, I felt so out of place. Everyone else seemed to have photoshop at home, I had never used it before. We weren't well-off at all, so there was no chance I would ever have it at home. I honestly felt embarrassed, there I was fiddling about with wires, into my VCR in my bedroom, when others cracking on with the latest software. I ended up flunking graphic design as a GCSE. So how bloody coincidental that today, I explored the Media Toolkit for Discover Creative Careers, that the first Video I look at, was someone with the EXACT job I had dreamt of two decades ago. We have such an important role to play in the Careers Industry, truly. Do not take it lightly. #careers #creativecareers #creativity #discovercreative

Providing marketing solutions and services for hands-on business owners who don’t have the time or knowledge to manage the marketing required to keep growing their business.
I love hearing about other people’s business journey’s – how they’ve come to be doing what they’re doing today. It’s something I like to understand when talking to clients as it gives me a sense of what motivates them and what they’re good at. Was it something they knew they wanted to do from an early age? Or something that developed out of trying different paths? Looking back over my life I can join the dots on the creative path. My career you could say began back in school days. Always loved art time, and took art through to the end of high school. Looking back my love of design, magazines and books developed through the book projects my friend and I use to make up during the school holidays – yes I know, a nerdy thing to do! But we loved taking a subject, researching it, hand writing out copy, drawing title pages and any images, using a photocopier to get any coloured images. We had to visit the library and get books out – no Google in those days haha! I used to love making up the title pages in my subject books too – anybody remember those?? At the end of school, not really knowing what I wanted to do, I applied and was accepted into the Elam School of Fine Arts but at the same time had applied for a junior graphic designer role in a Parnell art studio… and so my design career began. I’ve been in the creative industry all my working life. ▶ How about your work / business journey? ▶ Did you know what you wanted to do when you left school? ▶ Or has your career path been a winding road? --------- I enjoy learning and getting to understand what a business is about and who their clients are. To then be able to sort through the marketing options and create solutions that support, reinforce and cross-promote each other, and keep the branding consistent across all marketing channels.

When you've been looking at graphics all day and approving posts, while mentally noting down the last minute changes from the director that you need to do when you had initially planned an early knock-off. Suddenly, you can speak gibberish. #marketingandcommunications #digitalmarketing #publicrelations #jobhunting #entrylevel #hiring #opportunities #mediarelations

Co-Founder & Creative Director at Tighe-Mearns-Smith Ltd || Creative Studio || As seen at Saatchi Gallery, London Fashion Week & Pinewood Studios
To create graphics for culture magazines you need to be immersed in culture. This is more than just a job for me, it's a lifestyle. As both a designer and a consumer, I can tell when something has been made by someone who isn't really part of the ecosystem and it’s often the make or break of the success of a design - real passion I know this, and it’s why I get commissioned to create graphics like these 👇 Book a call - https://calendly.com/t-m-s

Neurocreative brand identity and graphic designer, copywriter, web designer, video editor and content creator for neurodivergent women in business
What’s your biggest weakness? We all know that job interview question – the one where they tell you to turn a positive into a negative. “Oh, I’m a perfectionist.” “I work too hard.” Humble-brags. But I recently had an experience where something about myself that I thought was a strength was actually considered to be a weakness. Confession time, here goes. ... I like to make things better. That’s why I’m a graphic designer, and why I’ve been a designer for almost 13 years. I like to improve things. I like to make things more efficient, streamlined, and functional. But that doesn’t just mean visually, in terms of design, but also processes and ways of working. Before I moved into design and communications, I was a PA and administrator, so organisation is still my jam. So if I’m working with a new client and encounter ways of working that seem inefficient, chaotic, and actually slow down the design process, I like to (politely and professionally) make it known. If communication isn’t working, I like to (again, politely and professionally) discuss how we can ensure we’re all on the same page and that everyone understands each other. Usually, clients say to me “If you have any ideas about how to make this process better, go for it!” (In fact, someone just said this to me in a meeting today.) But during my recent experience, I was told that I shouldn’t be telling them how to run their business, and that their process worked just fine, and they had no plans to change it. (I was also then subjected to some unprofessional behaviour, so I excused myself from the situation as we clearly weren’t a good fit.) But now I’m left wondering: is what I considered to be one of my strengths actually a liability? Should I wait to be asked before making suggestions, even if myself and my colleagues are struggling with a difficult process? I guess one objection in nearly 13 years isn’t too bad. So if anyone is looking for a designer who likes to make things better, drop me a message! I’m pretty booked up for November but always welcome a chat if you like the look of my portfolio, which can be found on www.lisapuplett.com (new website coming soon)!
