Building the most flexible on-demand network of space designed for people with the freedom to work from anywhere.
I admire Catherine Furness for creating my community’s third place. When I moved into my current neighbourhood back in 2018, I threw myself into community building through our residents association. I took on a leadership role, organizing clean-ups, garden tours, summer parties, and community meetings. Fast forward to 2024, I am now a dad to an incredible toddler. Every day, he wants to go to the playground up the street to ride the slide and see his toddler buddies. Despite living here for years, it was only recently that I became curious about the park's name and its origins. I discovered that the park exists because Catherine Furness donated her home and land to the city of Halifax in perpetuity. She didn't leave it to family, sell it, or rent it out; she donated it to enhance the quality of life for her community for generations to come. What a hero. Because of this park, I know dozens of neighbors and their kids. We invite each other to barbecues and birthday parties. Our lives are insurmountably richer because of her generosity. A third place is a space outside of home or office where you see familiar faces repeatedly. This consistent familiarity breeds deeper bonds and relationships. As we build LAUFT, we think about the concept of the third space and what it means for people. How can we make people feel more welcome? How can we break down barriers? How do we help people connect? Catherine Furness is a huge inspiration to me and continues to influence my work in creating a new kind of third place for people with the freedom to work from anywhere. #MakeSmartWork #WorkFromAnywhere #DistributedWork #RemoteWork #HybridWork #RTO #Community #ThirdPlace

Trust us when we say redevelopment will happen in Detroit, it will happen! Today, City Council unanimously approved the final plans for Hotel Water Square, a new high-rise with 600 hotel rooms on the former footprint of the Joe Louis Arena. The developers, working with residents, have committed to fighting homelessness, domestic violence and trafficking, while investing heavily in opportunities for youth. The 25-story skyscraper will soon begin construction, becoming next-door neighbors with the already completed Residences at Water Square. Another cool hotel feature will be the pedestrian bridge, that when completed, will span over 2nd Avenue and provide a direct connection to Huntington Place Convention Center. The Hotel at Water Square NAC and the Developer agreed to specific and significant agreements for each of the identified areas of project impact. We are proud that our engagement in the CBO process has yielded significant commitments from Sterling Group to the community including multi-year donations totaling $400,000 to local non-profits addressing homelessness, domestic violence, trafficking, youth internships, and community initiatives; $250,000 in post-secondary scholarships for local students; and a $500,000 contribution towards improvements to the West Riverfront People Mover Station. These commitments along with many others represented in the Tier 1 Community Benefits Agreement include provisions that we are confident will result in beneficial outcomes for the Impact Area and throughout the larger community.#DetroitistheFuture 💫

What could Community Ownership in Saxonvale look like? Paul Oster, Mayday Saxonvale Director walks us through how the community assets in Saxonvale would be owned with the Mayday Saxonvale plan. By increasing control for the #community, enhancing #communityvalues, and maximising #communityprofit we can ensure the best possible value for #Frome. Our plan is to have as much community space as possible owned by the community in perpetuity. #Heritagebuildings like the Western Warehouse, Press Shops, and Notts Stores - if we put these spaces, these buildings in the ownership of the community, there are so many opportunities for what we can do with them, now and in the future. We are SO grateful for our community partners. These partnerships are vital in the success of our mission at Crop & Kettle. Here are 5 ways that community partnerships make us better: 1.) Shared Knowledge - Community Partnerships grant us a richer depth of experience and wisdom with fresh perspectives. 2.) Shared Resources - They bridge the gaps of our independent organizations. 3.) Building Relationships - We love both connecting our partners and being connected by our partners to others through each of our respective networks! 4.) New Opportunities - When relationships are built, new opportunities develop through each other's networks. 5.) Greater Resilience - We're better together! These partnership provide us opportunities to support one another through change and challenges. Well Done and well-deserved
Global events coordinator at University of Portsmouth Founder of the Reverse advent calendar Portsmouth
Last night I had the pleasure to attend the Police and Crime Commissioner Awards hosted by Donna Jones in Winchester dedicated to recognising those who have helped make communities safer and have improved the lives of others. Tough competition in the category community volunteer of the year, so many deserving volunteers and although my nominee didn’t win the category huge congratulations must go to Ousmane Drame founder of URBOND charity in Portsmouth. I nominated Ousmane for his outstanding dedication working to advance diversity and equality in the city and beyond. Ousumane’s charity URBOND promotes a community which is strong, cohesive, and inclusive of all beliefs, backgrounds, and ideologies. HomeClub looks at hundreds of articles every day. We choose the best ones to share with our readers. This gives you a quick look at what's happening in the home improvement industry. The article below is one we picked. Community revitalization efforts can have a profound impact on local residents, fostering a sense of belonging and improving quality of life. Lowe's Foundation Hometowns program exemplifies this by awarding $10 million in grants to 100 nonprofits across the United States, as reported by Lowe's Companies, Inc.'s newsroom. These grants will fund diverse projects, from building tiny homes for veterans in South Dakota to creating a community garden in Detroit. By supporting initiatives that address specific local needs, Lowe's is not only improving physical spaces but also strengthening community bonds and providing essential services to vulnerable populations. This commitment to community development demonstrates the power of corporate social responsibility in creating lasting positive change. It is estimated more than 100,000 people nationwide live in severe housing deprivation, effectively on the doorstep of homelessness. About 3,600 among that count are people considered to be living without shelter, some of them in cars, or on the streets. Meet David. ~ David soon realised he was not the only person on the peninsula living in a car. He would drive around Wellington’s south coast and recognise the same run-down jalopies, parked in exactly the same spots. Often, the exteriors were sea-spray faded, conspicuous beside clean holiday vans. Unlikely to be roadworthy, let alone fit for habitation. ~ David is one of the new tenants residing within our latest community housing development, in the heart of Kilbirnie, Wellington. There are 18 other homes in our Kilbirnie development, in addition to the house David moved into. Around back, 10 more homes are under construction, along with a community room and a communal garden. "Community housing relies heavily on private funding and donations. Dwell’s next development, in Newtown, will consist of around 40 homes. And we're ready to build more! There are so many more people like David that we could house." ~ says our CE, Alison Cadman.
