National Agroecology Planning in East Africa: Takeaways from Cultivating Change Gathering in Arusha, Tanzania Cultivating Change, a gathering co-organized by Global Alliance for the Future of Food Biovision Foundation and the Agroecology Coalition featured East Africa governments and civil society organizations (CSOs) presenting their emerging agroecology plans, with aspirations to muster public and private financing to support implementation. Our key takeaways: 🔵 Planning in partnership is essential 🔵 National agroecology plans need implementation and accountability mechanisms 🔵 Financing agroecological transitions requires new funds and repurposing existing subsidies 🔵 Effective allocation of agroecology monies requires flows to governments and CSOs 🔵 Agroecology planning must take place at national, municipal and regional governments to be effective 🔵 A human rights frame must inform agroecology planning 🔵 Track agroecology progress through appropriate metrics 🔵 Donors are essential and must respond to community-led solutions Read on for further context about each of these takeaways. https://lnkd.in/gfgURUix

As a youth ,Great to be among the core group to draft the National Agroecology strategy . it's an inspiration to encourage and inspire other youth into Agroecology #pelumug #youthinagroecology

Work late into the night this week to finish a first draft of the National Agroecology Strategy in Uganda. The work this week by a dedicated core group of Ugandan stakeholders and ministry officials builds on a broad consultation, positive results with agroecology in Uganda, and the increasing global recognition for agroecology as part of the solution to challenges of food security, wealth creation, climate adaptation, soil regeneration and loss of biodiversity. There is no shortage of challenges. Despite the strong opportunities in agroecology, current policies and subsidies are largely supportive of existing conventional farm practices, and often undermine unintentionally growth in agroecology. The purpose of the strategy is to create a positive political and market environment for the growth and further development of agroecology, as a robust pathway for farmers, supply chains and communities. The gathering of organizations for smallholder farmers, young green entrepreneurs, organic businesses, slow food advocates, research and government, worked to identify truly enabling actions that can support all actors in their work to upscale agroecology in the fields, in the market, and in research, finance and trade—empowering farmers and agroecology actors to drive change. Good discussions on how to position the agroecology strategy within government priorities and generate greater political support for agroecology and ensure full implementation of the plan. The national consultation and policy development process is coordinated by PELUM Uganda and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) and a team from Biovision Foundation, including John Garcia Ulloa, Charlotte Pavageau and myself. josephine akia, Harriet Evelyn Nakasi, Aijuka Joshua, Alex Lwakuba, Chariton Namuwoza, National Organic Agricultural Movement of Uganda. Delighted to co-author this piece with Nina Isabella Moeller for the FAO #AgroecologyKnowledgeHub. Measuring agroecological change is complex, but critical in view of the need to establish the credibility, applicability and vitality of #agroecology beyond any shadow of doubt. There are several things we need to 'measure': ☑ Guaging the performance, impacts and co-benefits of agroecology on the ground, vis-a-vis the transformative outcomes we desire. ☑ Measuring the "agroecologicalness" of a particular initiative or project, vis-a-vis the principles and elements of agroecology, using assessment methods and tools such as FAO's #TAPE tool. The newly developed Agroecology Finance Assessment Framework helps track the flow, quality, and the modalities of the finance that is essential to support agroecology. See it here: https://bit.ly/3LbE7ed Notably, this assessment framework also includes a verification system of 'red flags' to identify certain practices that contradict agroecology values (eg monocultures). This is essential to discerning true transformative impact, and prioritizing those initiatives that enhance social justice and affect real system change. More interesting insights from the Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS). Latin America showing the way!
Participatory Guarantee Systems for Accessible #Agroecology Markets: Learning for a Way Forward Read our latest story—a look into the rich conversation we held with community in April to discuss grassroots experiences with PGS as a way to strengthen access to markets and trust between consumers and producers. “What is now known as PGS began much earlier in the agroecological movement as a way of resisting expensive, one-sided international auditing systems that were alien to local realities. At the time, we called it participatory certification, bringing farming families to the forefront of the process. More than an economic tool, one of the principles at the root of the PGS is to build relationships of trust and knowledge exchange, involving producers and consumers.” Angela Cordeiro, Co-Director, Agroecology Fund https://lnkd.in/gyEzVgzB Agroecology Coalition Global Alliance for the Future of Food ESAFF Uganda FUNDACION AGRECOL Andes Thanal Trust Georgina Catacora-Vargas FAO Faris Ahmed CEDAC - Centro de Desenvolvimento Agroecológico do Cerrado

💡 Have you ever heard about National #Agroecology Strategies? Through a large range of policy interventions, these strategies support countries on their path toward 👉 more #sustainable #foodsystems, 👉 ensure healthy and accessible food for national populations, 👉 define concrete measures for #climatechange mitigation and 👉 support the fight against #biodiversity loss. 🔭 An agroecological transition requires multiple measures influencing production practices, natural resources governance and use, markets, consumption patterns and food environment, research or other institutional aspects. National agroecology strategies (NAS) can act as a lighthouse 🚨 to coordinate those various actions and actors in charge of them. 🎯 Biovision is supporting efforts to develop National Agroecology Strategies in East Africa. The region is experiencing a unique dynamic with an increasing awareness of economic, social and ecological benefits that agroecology can deliver if it is supported by concrete and effective policies. This dynamic is reflected in the development of National Agroecology Strategies in multiple countries such as #Kenya, #Uganda, #Tanzania or #Zambia. 🌍 Our policy and advocacy experts in Kenya Francis Maleche Shivonje highlights agroecology's critical role in building resilient food systems. Check out this insightful article on why Agroecology is a game-changer. 🌾🔄 #Agroecology #ClimateChange #SustainableFarming #sustainablefoodsystems #food #nutrition #health #policy #frameworks Agroecology Coalition Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH FAO 💡 https://lnkd.in/em_wFFqi
