#pitchandrun is my favorite recent example of how to build a great community. First off, it's a ridiculously simple idea. Nihal Mehta got into running, trained for a marathon, etc., but also has a family and kids--so he decided to be time efficient and combine his need to get some miles in with the constant requirement to stay connected to founders as a VC. He put out a simple format and stuck with it--a no-one-left-behind run of a short to moderate distance and said, "Hey, wanna meet me? Join me on a run." He layered on some simple community features, like getting to join a group chat after a certain amount of participation, a hashtag, etc. and now I would say that #pitchandrun is easily one of the best and most supportive communities in NYC--and it has also grown to other cities as well. This wasn't three-dimensional community hacker chess. It was just authenticity, openness, consistency and simplicity, compounded over time.
Whatever you're into, find a way to make it easy for others of entry-level ability to join in, do it regularly, and support not only their participation but their own passions outside of the activity. That's the key to a great community and there are tons of art appreciation, volunteering, kayaking (ah-hem), improv, code learning, book club, etc. communities just waiting for someone to build into the fabric of NYC tech and beyond. When you do that, I'll jump at the chance to feature and support it in the nextNYC weekly event newsletter (http://next.nyc) because it all makes doing the really hard work of startups that much more fun and supported.
every wk feels like a tech week in NYC, but apparently next wk is the actual "NY #techweek" 🤷🏾
in any event, kick off your wk in epic fashion- running with founders & investors down NYC's beautiful WSH with team #pitchandrun (mon 9a, 350+ already RSVP'd!🤯)
