What is the future of business services sector in Poland? Few thoughts from ABSL Poland Summit 2023 Last week I had a pleasure to participate in ABSL Poland Summit. During 3 days of conference approx. 130 panellists discussed the hot topics related to now and tomorrow of #SSC sector in Poland. You need to have a lot of appreciation to how resilient the sector turned out in last couple of years, regardless of turbulences around – pandemic, very difficult geopolitical situation in Europe, accelerating technological changes related to increasingly remote work models, automation and AI. In these circumstances the business keeps growing and developing, reaching 4.5% of estimated share in polish GDP (increase of 1.2 p.p. from 2019) and 6.7% of share in Poland’s overall employment in enterprises (source: ‘Business Services Sector in Poland 2023’ report). With all achievements so far, during many panels and presentations, I could clearly feel that attention is focused on what is still to come. The accelerating changes are forcing to build a strategy and keep redefining the models of work. These changes some see as an opportunity, some as a risk. In my view both are right. Among many discussions, my attention was drawn to a debate ‘Stay ahead with Data’, on which panellists touched on the question about future of business services in Poland. Few thoughts from that discussion are worth sharing: ·      Poland has a very strong talents pool, ·      Forget about cost efficiency – we need to bring new value, ·      The way of working needs rethinking -> use of automation and new business models, ·      We need to switch from global to transformative organisations, ·      Build diverse companies and develop talents, ·      Offices are still needed to build fundament for diverse Teams, Is this the right recipe for a success? Can we do it? How? These are the questions I came back with from the summit. What are yours? 

The ABSL Summit in Cracow, a prestigious event hosting leaders from the Global Business Services (GBS) sector, just concluded. As an attendee, I am extremely grateful to the ABSL Poland team for organizing such a high-profile conference with many prominent guest speakers driving insightful discussions. Here are my key takeaways from the event that I would like to share with a broader audience: 🌍 Poland's Strategic Role: Poland continues to be a central hub for GBS, which is often misconceived as merely a collection of low-cost servicing centers. We should instead focus on maximizing the value-to-cost ratio. Traditionally, if costs were low, as has been the case for many years, the emphasis on value was less pronounced. However, with significant increases in wage levels over the last decade, it is imperative for the local GBS sector to focus on creating high-value roles that make substantial business impacts. 👑 Innovative Leadership: Jacinda Ardern, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, showcased a leadership style marked by empathy and resilience, yet standing firm where required. Her approach provides a refreshing counter to traditional machismo. Could such a style be effective in global superpowers like the U.S. and China? 📈 Data Growth: We are experiencing a data production rate that is best described as exponential-over-exponential. In simple terms, more than 90% of all available data was generated in the last 24 months. Visualizing this on a conventional linear-scale chart would show the vertical axis stretching to the moon - a truly fascinating illustration of our digital era.
