Employee Strength: The company employs over 260 people, with more than 125 clinicians and 50% of its workforce based in the UK. Growth Trajectory: Established in 2018, Spectrum.Life experienced 60% revenue growth in 2023 and is expected to exceed 50% growth again in 2024. Notably, over three-quarters of new business is coming from outside of Ireland. TL;DR - The world seems on fire. Let’s work together at ViVE to fix some of it. This year feels like an adventure through surreality. Juxtaposed with the rise of a third world war and our seeming flirtation with fascism, I ground my hope in the work I do. This is why I’m jubilant as I sit in an airport lounge about to board a plane to #ViVE2024. I relish the opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues through the years who share my passion for making an impact on a broken #healthcare system. I look forward to learning from new voices who bring #diverse perspectives of #LivedExperience with them. I can’t wait to have my own world view challenged so I might stretch my the boundaries of my comfort zone and knowledge. ViVE is such a place to do that. Tactically, I’m interested in seeing new technologies that further our capabilities to provide accessible, affordable, and #CulturallyCompetentCare that integrates into the lives of our citizenry. Part 2 of “a VC wants to buy a U.S. health system”: Who wants $1B to $3B for their health system? Becker’s just interviewed Dr. Marc Harrison, former Intermountain CEO and the CEO of the new General Catalyst VC firm-owned company HATCo, on their plans to buy a health system. Here are my big takeaways: 1️⃣ Willing to spend $1B - $3B to buy a health system. They want a “robust” system that has a history of value-based care, “excellence” and a “desire to serve their community”. My thoughts: So what size of health system might this be? One reference point: in 2018, HCA purchased Mission Health for $1.5B. Mission Health had 6 hospitals, a bunch of surgery centers and outpatient clinics and 12,000 employees. So I’d guess something in that ballpark. 2️⃣ Marc believes the traditional VC mindset in healthcare has been too “short-term” and “point solution based”. He plans to take the long-term view (“decades”) with a focus on prevention. My thoughts: I respect the transparency that this is unlikely to be a typical 10-year or less VC play. And if this is truly about creating a living lab, almost like a venture studio, for their healthcare portfolio companies - maybe the ROI comes not from eventually exiting the health system, but just increasing the probability of success for their portfolio companies by being their 1st and primary reference customer. 3️⃣ A big focus is going to be on bringing successful point solutions together, prove they can operate effectively as a platform, and then build a playbook for successful implementation of the platform offering - eventually selling this to other health systems. My thoughts: Sounds effectively like a private equity roll-up approach, except perhaps without the M&A to start (but possible option to M&A the ones that work well together). Plus, with your own health system, you can work out the kinks on delivering an integrated offering before selling the “platform” more widely to others. There’s merit to that. 4️⃣ HATCo now has an ecosystem of 20 health systems across U.S., Canada, UK and Israel. Marc clarified that they don’t plan to be competitors to health systems and they don’t expect to buy more than one. Their goal is to use the health system they buy as a demonstration of the value they can add to health systems. My thoughts: I’m unclear on what exactly the health system “partners” have committed to, but at the very least, I assume HATCo views them as potential early adopters for the solutions they validate in their own health system. Ultimately we might all be overthinking this. This might be as simple as believing “we can accelerate VC deal flow and the success of GC’s venture-backed healthcare companies by providing every healthcare company’s 1st health system customer.” Of course I hope it’s more transformative than that. Over the past two months I've had the opportunity to connect with founders and startups through my role on the Venturous team. This opportunity has also given me insights into Hashed Health, a Nashville based venture studio that traditionally works to drive innovation in the Healthcare space. Amid this journey, I had the privilege of engaging in a fascinating conversation with Molly Moore, CEO of Bramble , alongside fellow scout Parker Brewster. Her journey in healthcare is nothing short of inspiring: 🔷 She started in healthcare taking out the trash and calling people to remind them of their next day appointments as an after school job, using the money to pay for gas for her hand me down 1984 station wagon. Molly's dedication led her to an administrative role in an optometrist office where she worked while she pursued her education at night, never losing sight of her passion for healthcare. 🔷 Her career included roles at Aetna, United, and Regence Blue Shield where she worked in provider relations and provider contracting. After she earned her MBA from the University of Washington, she pursued consulting and was later recruited to work in VC and became part of Cambia Health Solutions, now Echo Health Ventures.    🔷 Parenthood prompted a career switch to running the health benefits for a self-funded Taft-Hartley trust.    🔷 She then embarked on a journey to build a blockchain-based health plan but faced challenges along the way.    🔷 In 2021, Molly left the company she helped start. Many experienced the burnout of high demand jobs and kids at home during Covid, and Molly was no exception. She began working as an independent consultant, and was hired by one of her clients. Molly was approached by Hashed Health to pursue the idea of what is now Bramble. Molly's experiences shed light on the trials and tribulations of achieving price transparency and creating sustainable healthcare plans that prioritize high-quality care and value for patients and providers. Her insights also delve into the evolving landscape of healthcare innovation and the challenges women face in fundraising. Hashed Health, a champion in supporting healthcare entrepreneurs, connects individuals like Molly with resources, VCs, ecosystem builders, founders, and more. Currently, Bramble Health is on an exciting trajectory:  🔷 Currently raising a seed round.    🔷 Building a national presence with 3,000 providers on their platform and plans to expand further.    🔷 Collaborating with industry leaders like Radion, PCC, and Cirrus MD.
