Did you know National Wildlife Week was created to honour Jack Miner, who was credited with saving the Canada goose from the brink of extinction? Wildlife conservation has continued since then, but there is still a lot of work to do. Over the last 25 years, the number of new species at risk has risen by an average of 4% per year. Our report on discretionary powers to protect species at risk found that Environment and Climate Change Canada was not proactive in prompting action to protect species under urgent threat. This calf captivated me today. Watching it eat peacefully reminded me of human-wildlife conflicts facing some communities in Africa. HWC is among the most pressing issues in wildlife conservation. Human-wildlife conflicts occur when the needs and behaviors of humans clash with those of wildlife, leading to negative consequences for both. Increased population in communities adjacent to protected areas and habitat destruction have resulted in increased encounters between humans and wildlife, often leading to loss of property, livelihoods, and even cattle and human lives. Efforts to address human-wildlife conflicts have become crucial in order to ensure the coexistence of humans and wildlife. Various strategies have been implemented to mitigate these conflicts, ranging from the creation of buffer zones and wildlife corridors to the development of alternative livelihood options for local communities. These initiatives aim to reduce the dependence of communities on natural resources, thus minimizing the chances of conflicts arising. Additionally, education and awareness programs have been instrumental in fostering understanding and empathy towards wildlife, encouraging people to adopt practices that minimize potential conflicts. By finding innovative and sustainable solutions, we can strive towards a future where humans and wildlife can peacefully coexist, ensuring the conservation of both our natural heritage and the well-being of local communities. #Humanwildlifecoexistence #wildlifeconservation #localcommunity #hwc #sustainabledevelopment

🌊 **Coral reefs are the vibrant heart of our oceans, home to over 1/4 of all marine life.** 🐟🦀🦐🐠 These incredible ecosystems provide food, livelihoods, coastal protection, and cultural heritage for more than 500 million people. Yet, they are under threat. We can make a difference! Here's how: * **Reduce plastic use**: Less plastic means cleaner oceans. 🌍🚫 * **Support sustainable seafood**: Choose fish caught in ways that protect reefs. 🐠🦐 * **Conserve water**: Less runoff means less pollution entering our oceans. 💧🚿 **Healthy watersheds support healthy people.** Let's cherish and protect our coral reefs for future generations. In Cambodia, one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, poverty and wildlife conservation presents a significant challenge. The rich flora and fauna attract conservationists and researchers, but pervasive poverty threatens both human livelihoods and ecosystem health as Cambodia grapples with illegal logging, poaching and land encroachment.
In Cambodia, the nexus of poverty and wildlife conservation presents a unique challenge and opportunity. An insightful article by The Borgen Project explores how the Keo Seima REDD+ project is redefining the value of standing forests for local communities. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eUcNn7Tk

No let-up in the decline of England's wildlife - today is the launch the #StateOfNature report 📣 Despite great efforts to restore ecosystems, save species and move towards nature-friendly land and sea use, England's nature continues to decline 📉 Of almost 9,000 species assessed, 1 in 8 English species are now threatened with extinction including European Eel, Lady's Slipper Orchid, Turtle Dove and Water Vole. England is now one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world 🏞 However, we know that conservation projects and legislation can have an impact. We have never had a better understanding of the #StateOfNature & what is needed to fix it 🌎 To read the report and find out how you can help, visit https://lnkd.in/ee_Dwqrf

🐆 CCF UK was part of the #2024GlobalCheetahSummit! With fewer than 7,500 cheetahs left in just 9% of their historic range, urgent conservation measures are crucial. We brought together global experts to discuss key initiatives for immediate impact and future restoration plans. From delving into the intricate ecology of cheetahs to addressing the urgency of Ending the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT), and mapping out Cheetah Reintroduction initiatives, the summit covered crucial ground. 🌿 But it didn't stop there. We delved deep into creative strategies to combat primary existential threats — human-wildlife conflict, loss of habitat, shrinking prey base, fragmentation, and illegal wildlife trade. Together, we're shaping a future where cheetahs thrive. #SaveTheCheetah! #WildlifeProtection #CheetahConservationFund
