Is your code YAGNI? You've probably heard of YAGNI in software engineering. It's a trendy word nowadays. But what is it anyway? Here's the breakdown: Y - You A - Aren't G - Going to N - Need I - It If your code is YAGNI, you get: - Reduced complexity by avoiding unnecessary code. - Increased productivity, as developers spend time only on the requirements at hand. - Improved adaptability since there's less code to change when requirements eventually change. - Simple testing process, as there are fewer paths and cases to test In my experience, everyone says their code is YAGNI nowadays. However, upon closer inspection, the code is usually over-engineered, just like everyone else's. Heck, I fall prey to this temptation of writing some cool feature pretty often myself. So, how can you make your code really YAGNI? - Don't write code "for the future". Only implement things that you know are needed for the requirements at hand. - The simpler - the better. Choose the most straightforward solution that solves the problem. Complexity can always be added later. - Refactor Ruthlessly. Keep the codebase simple and tidy. - Focus. Work only on tasks that are scheduled for the current cycle. - Integrate CI. Deploy and integrate your code frequently.
