Time to continue our #FAQ series to answer the questions you want to know! This week we look at the question: Can a patient choose to stop hospice care at any time? The simple answer is yes. The patient has the right to discontinue hospice care at any point. If the patient's condition improves, they decide to pursue curative treatment, or they simply wish to discontinue hospice services, they can inform their hospice care team. The patient's preferences and well-being are always respected, and the care plan can be adjusted according to their choices. Additionally, if a patient's condition stabilizes or improves to the extent that they no longer meet the eligibility criteria for hospice care, they can transition back to traditional medical care. Sharing my experience with starting hospice care for my mother, I highlight the issue of getting the start of the timing right when you still want to see your doctors. In general, hospice is started too late. On the other hand, just because someone is hospice eligible, they don’t have to start right away.
