The X-47B Pegasus was an Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (#uav ) demonstrator developed by #northropgrumman in the early 2010s. It successfully demonstrated #unmanned #carrier landings, Aerial Refueling, among several other successful tests before being relegated to storage after the initial set of testing was completed in 2015. In this historical aerospace engineering analysis, I look at the history of the X-47B, its place in history, and perform calculations to estimate its capabilities.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) successfully demonstrated an inflight release of its Advanced Air-Launched Effects (A2LE) platform, releasing an A2LE from the internal weapons bay of a GA-ASI MQ-20 Avenger® Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). The demonstration took place on Nov. 28, 2023, over Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, capping a manufacturing, structural test, and flight demonstration. GA-ASI’s design and engineering team partnered with Divergent Technologies, Inc. for the A2LE vehicle design and build, matching GA-ASI’s aircraft design expertise with the Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS™) to support rapid, low-cost manufacturing of the demonstration vehicle. The demonstration vehicle airframe was 100 percent additively manufactured and was designed to meet the captive carriage and ejection loads of the jet-powered aircraft with internal weapons bays. The topology-optimized AM structure was validated via proof and pit ejection testing prior to the flight demonstration. The demonstration highlighted the design efficiencies that can be realized when AM is incorporated early in the design process and throughout the vehicle. The Drone Coalition members created a special €45M fund, Denmark will buy Ukrainian howitzers, and Ukraine will produce NATO ammunition with the US. The member countries of the Drone Coalition have created a special fund for rapid joint procurement of UAVs for Ukraine. The Netherlands, Britain, Latvia, New Zealand, and Sweden, which joined the coalition on July 10, have pledged to contribute more than €45M to the fund. In particular, the Netherlands will contribute €20M. The Drone Coalition plans to supply Ukraine with one million FPV drones after more than 265 companies have registered to supply FPV drones to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukroboronprom and the US company, Northrop Grumman, signed an agreement to produce NATO-standard medium-caliber ammunition. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited American companies (in particular, BAE Systems, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics) to work in the Ukrainian market and cooperate with domestic enterprises.
