Two power lines one goal! Late last week, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved an order granting the authorization application to charge negotiated rates on SouthWestern Power Group’s (SWPG) high-voltage alternating-current (HVAC) RioSol Transmission Project. When energized, the estimated $2.4 billion investment, will span about 550 miles across New Mexico and Arizona. Construction is expected to start in 2026 with completion in 2028. The alternating current power line will allow for interconnection of both electrical generation and electrical users at any point along the transmission line. The RioSol line will run next to the currently under-construction 550-kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) SunZia transmission line. SWPG (owned by MMR Group) sold the SunZia project to Pattern Energy Group in 2022. Hitachi Energy’s HVDC Light® technology and MACH™ digital control platform was selected for the project. Portland General Electric (PGE) joins effort to develop and construct $3.2 billion, 415-mile HVDC interconnector project! Earlier today, Portland General Electric signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Grid United and ALLETE, Inc. in the development of the North Plains Connector, an approximately 415-mile high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission line to be constructed with endpoints near Bismarck, North Dakota and Colstrip, Montana. The parties will now work to finalize definitive agreements regarding PGE’s participation, which is expected to involve a 20% ownership share of the project. The North Plains Connector will be the nation’s first HVDC transmission connection between three regional U.S. electric energy markets - the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), the Western Interconnection, and the Southwest Power Pool. The world’s power grids are coming under increasing strain from the destabilizing effects of variable and often unpredictable renewable energy (i.e. solar and wind) in the power mix. This is heightened by the closing of conventional power plants, which store large amounts of energy in their rotational equipment (called inertia) that is used to counteract disturbances that could cause an outage in the power grid. The SVC Light Enhanced solution addresses these challenges by combining two power quality and grid stabilization technologies in a single compact device. This pioneering technology comprises an SVC Light STATCOM which provides vital reactive power to balance the impact of renewables. It also incorporates supercapacitors which store hundreds of megawatt-seconds of energy and automatically release it within milliseconds when disturbances occur, thus reducing reliance on conventional power plants. Full-Bridge SiC-Based Power Modules Provide Heightened Voltage Headroom Continuously striving for ever greater product quality, through stringent testing and extensive screening, SemiQ has just introduced its latest performance-enhanced silicon-carbide (SiC) MOSFET modules. These further push the performance envelope - so that OEMs specifying them are able to benefit from markedly differentiated characteristics. The new high-density full-bridge configuration QSiC modules provide greater operational margins. The company will be demonstrating them at its stand (#2245) during the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) - which takes place from 25th to 29th February, in Long Beach, California. Though rated up to 1200V, the modules have been tested to breakdown voltages that surpass 1400V. Consequently, there is plenty of scope beyond their ratings to squeeze more out of the power system designs they are employed in. Their on-resistance (RDSon) values are just 20mOhm on some models, resulted in minimal power losses being exhibited.
