In Prince George's County, we are reimagining the re-entry process for our returning citizens! With informed perspectives and new systems, we are taking a holistic approach to re-entry, aimed at reducing recidivism in our County. County Executive Angela Alsobrooks launched our Returning Citizens Affairs Division (RCAD) in 2022, led by Michael Williams, MPA, after recommendations made by our Returning Citizens Advisory Board, which was launched in 2019. Because we understand that securing a job is not the only thing one needs to do to successfully transition back into society, RCAD also offers mentorship, transitional housing, document preparation, and more.✅ The impact that these initiatives & programs have had on participants so far is promising and recidivism amongst participants is down significantly. For us, Second Chance Month is beyond just a holiday. Learn more about our re-entry initiatives & programs at: mypgc.us/RCAD Employers can find more information on our Re-Entry Employment Incentive Program at: https://lnkd.in/ermb7wrF

When I think of the opportunity divide, the first thing that comes to mind is how college was tuition free at one point in time. This article I linked below states that our lawmakers are an example of the demographic that once received their college education for free, yet they are hesitant to have these types of educational resources available for students of today. Why did this occur? In 1966, Ronald Reagan who was not yet president but the governor of California came up with a proposal for the University of California to start charging a tuition fee in order to access higher education. His reasoning for this idea was "To get rid of undesirables..." This injustice extended to not only minority students, but working class white students as well. This caused a trend of tuition fees in schools, followed by a wave of student debt hindering people from MANY different walks of life. This series of events increased student debt by 3,819% from 1964 to 2019. In 15 years alone, Students from 2004 to 2019 have racked up around $1.6 trillion dollars in debt for their education. Black college graduates were observed to have twice as much loans as their white counterparts. It is now almost 2024. We are living in a post-pandemic society with Gen Z trying to pick up the pieces after having a two year pause from opportunities for personal and educational growth. This only made us hungrier for the day that we can break free of the opportunity divide that tried to force us apart from our friends and silenced us from sharing our different histories and backgrounds with one another. Knowledge is a powerful weapon, but we can never have a fair fight if we live in a world that armed our oppressors but not the ones we love. "Free College Was Once The Norm All Over America." For decades Corio has been a Labor-voting electorate - both State and Federal. It is to the great shame of both levels of government and the local representatives from the ALP and the LNP that Corio and Norlane have missed out on investments that would and should build the much-deserving community. It’s deemed to be too safe an electorate to be fussed with spending money when less secure seats need ‘attention’. Northern Futures had a 78% success rate in getting participants into work in 2022 - an astounding achievement that other employment programs would give their eye teeth for. Yet Corio and Norlane are Victoria’s most disadvantaged suburb and no-one is putting their hands in the taxpayers’ pockets to fund Northern Futures next year and into the future. Richard Marles - as Deputy Prime Minister - and Ella George, Lara MP - please do something to fix this! It is YOUR electorate and these are YOUR constituents.
As a board member of Geelong’s highly successful Northern Futures, I am deeply concerned about our ability to continue to provide important pre-employment training to the most disadvantaged community in the state - please see our media release for information.
