Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) has achieved a new annual passenger record! In September 2023, the airport surpassed its 2019 figure of 1,008,716 passengers. The airport forecasts reaching 1.2 million passengers by year-end 2023, indicating not only a full post-pandemic recovery but also exceeding pre-pandemic levels, with an expected year-over-year growth of around 21%. This growth continues a trend of YXX's expansion before the pandemic, with annual passenger volumes increasing from 487,833 in 2015 to 842,212 in 2018. The airport's success is attributed to the global aviation industry's recovery and its lack of an Airport Improvement Fee, which encourages airlines to increase capacity and offer lower fares.

The #aviation recovery is becoming more uniform at Europe's top 10 airports, with most increasingly close to 2019 traffic levels. 👉 8/10 top 10 European aviation network airports are now showing very homogeneous recovery rates, with just 9% separating 2nd and 9th in recovery terms in August 2023. Back in January, by contrast, this was a much wider 20%. 1st and 10th in terms of airport recovery are however clear outliers: ► Leading the way is iGA Istanbul Airport, for which a 2019 data comparison is only possible as of May (the date in 2019 of full ops), and which has stayed in a very consistent band well above ⬆️ 2019 ✈️ traffic (122-117%) ever since. ► Whereas 10th place in recovery terms is Munich Airport, which despite a fairly rapid rise 📈 since March to 78% by August, still lags by 8% the nearest top 10 airport. In recovery terms, Munich is one of the 2 most-improved airports – alongside Rome-Fiumicino – showing a rise of ⬆️14% since January, with London-Gatwick (which has gone up 4 places in recovery terms to 4th) just behind on ⬆️13%.
