Funding that helped the child care industry respond to #COVID19 challenges is expiring this week. There’s a proposal to extend the chid care stabilization grants but with a stalemate in Congress over the FY 24 budget, it’s unclear how far the proposal will go. One organization predicts 3.2 million children will lose access to child care and 70,000 child care programs will close once the stabilization funds run out. #ChildCare #Economy

Guaranteed income programs support the health and economic well-being of families with low incomes, but participation in these programs can affect families’ eligibility for child care subsidies and other social safety net programs. The Office of Child Care in the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) for Children and Families recently released new proposed rules for the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF). CCDF is a federal program that funds states, tribes, and territories to provide subsidies to families to help them afford child care. In fiscal year 2020, more than 900,000 families and 1.5 million children benefited from financial assistance through CCDF each month. In Arizona, the Arizona Department of Economic Security administers child care subsidies under CCDF. The proposed changes are designed to: - Lower families' child care costs - Improve child care provider payment rates and practices - Streamline eligibility and enrollment processes National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) will be submitting comments on the proposed changes on behalf of our field, and you can contribute your feedback so the comments reflect your experience and expertise. Is Child Care too expensive? The public has 34 more days to weigh in! A program with a historically bi-partisan backing is considering dropping the cost of Child Care for nearly 80,000 American families, without impacting the revenue of Child Care providers. The Department of Health and Human Services is looking to cap the cost of Child Care for some at just 7% of a family's income. It's all part of a 30-year-old funding stream called the Child Care and Development Block Grant that provides flexible funding to states for Child Care subsidies for low-income, working families and children under 13. #CCDBG #AffordableChildCare

Congress may be a source of inaction when it comes to getting working families access to affordable and quality child care, but that isn't holding back SEIU child care providers from organizing and leading at the state level.
