The Silicon Valley chapter of CREW concluded a fantastic summer in late August with the 11th Annual Awards and Wine Celebration. Members and guests gathered at One Workplace to kick off the evening with networking, wine, and delicious hors d'oeuvres.
In addition to the customary networking, several CREW SV board and committee members were interviewed about their experiences and offered advice to those considering joining the only business organization dedicated to advancing women in the commercial real estate profession.

I had the most wholesome Irish women time last week at Women with Ambition’s 2nd annual International Women’s Day event. It was so lovely to walk into an intergenerational Irish women space here in New York and feel like I still have time to achieve all that I want to achieve. This sounds laughable but when society likes to tell you your life is over at 30, these kinds of spaces really help to quash that notion🤣
There were some phenomenal speakers so I wanted to share some of their fascinating points that really resonated with me👇🏻
🔸 Geraldine McGinty MD, MBA, FACR - Marry well. This is a profoundly simple point that I feel isn’t made enough. Geraldine went onto say that choosing your life partner is one of the most important things you can do when it comes to your career and pretty much everything in your life. They can either be your biggest supporter or your biggest adversary. Choose well and don’t rush it.
🔺 Andrea Haughian - Even if you don’t believe in yourself, believe in the person who believes in you. We’ve all been there (hopefully) where someone saw our potential even when we didn’t necessarily see it ourselves. Respect that person’s opinion and if they see worth in you, then don’t insult them by not believing it. Trust them and believe in yourself too.
🔹 Deirdre O’Connor - Stick out your hand, if you don’t like the one you find then stick it out again. I love this! So often we stick out our hand and get bitten and are afraid to try again but keep going until you find the right one, whether that’s someone who’s going to give you a job or someone who’s going to invest in your business, keep going.
🔺 Jane Ferguson - If you’re networking or looking for a mentor and you find someone interesting that you admire, ask them to also recommend two other people from their network to talk to as well. Chances are they’ll recommend people who you may never have heard of before and if you think that that initial person is great, imagine what the people they learn from themselves are like!
🔸 Ruth O'Farrell - Ruth drew comparisons between a saying often used in Ireland: “Empty vessels make the most sound” and a (contradictory to this) saying often used in the US: “The squeaky wheel gets the grease”. Make of that what you will; all I know is that too many people, and women in particular, are told to just sit back and be quiet and I don’t like that very much😂
I couldn’t type all of the speakers’ nuggets of wisdom in my phone fast enough as they were speaking😂 But it was a truly inspiring event and I thank Jane McCooey, Ciara Gormley, speakers, and many more for a wonderful evening💚

Today, the 8th of March, it is 10 years since Heidi Aven and I founded SHE Conference in response to the underrepresentation of female voices in the media, business world, and beyond, driven by a desire to showcase role models and amplify unheard perspectives.
Since then, nearly 40,000 people have participated in the conference itself! I am deeply appreciative to witness the level of engagement this initiative has generated, instilling hope that a significant number of individuals are committed to advancing positive change.
In recent years, I have been involved in the VC industry, collaborating with investor teams and founders.
Although there have been improvements in the last decade, the fact remains that men still make up over 80 percent of investment teams in the Nordic region. A report from European Women in VC and a 2020 report from Unconventional Ventures revealed that out of 9.1 billion euros invested in Nordic startups, those with female founders received only 2.2 percent of the funding, despite accounting for over 6 percent of the deals. Therefore, women are not only less frequently awarded funding, but also awarded significantly smaller amounts compared to men. Percentages alone do not do justice to the significant difference between men and women in VC funding. (Read my full article in Shifter.no )
Perhaps it is more accurate to express it as follows: In the period 2016-2019, all-male VC teams received approximately 8.1 billion euros in funding, mixed-gender teams received 0.8 billion euros, and all-female teams were awarded 0.2 billion euros. In a region that values equality, these numbers reveal a significant gap between ambition and reality.
We can do better than that! See you at SHE Conference 2024.

Here goes another International Women's Day :)
Reflecting back, I'm just overflowing with gratitude. I've been so lucky to cross paths with some incredibly inspiring female entrepreneurs. It's been quite an adventure, full of learning, growing, and, honestly, just realizing how powerful we are when we come together.
These amazing women have opened my eyes in so many ways. Each of their stories is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the sheer force of will. But you know what? The real magic has been in the community we've built. It's one thing to dream big, but it's another to have a squad that backs those dreams up with support, knowledge, and a whole lot of encouragement.
Now, I've got to say, as we celebrate all this awesomeness and the bonds we've forged, I can't help but think about the bigger picture. There are women and moms out there facing unimaginable challenges and struggles heightened by conflicts, societal barriers, and inequalities. It's a reminder of the bubble of privilege we're in.
We've got this incredible platform, this voice, and it's up to us to use it not just for celebrating our wins but for making a real difference. Let's shine a light on those global challenges; let's lend our strength to those who need it most.
Let's keep pushing, not just for our own success but as champions for women everywhere. The journey's far from over, but together, we've got what it takes to make waves and change lives.
Here's to us, to the power of unity, and to all the amazing things we'll achieve when we stand together for every woman across the globe.

As we continue celebrating International Women's Month, we want to share invaluable advice from one of our Latina leaders. Cindy Patino encourages young Latina women aspiring to work in nonprofits or similar fields to recognize their unique perspectives, build strong networks, stay curious, and prioritize well-being.
We asked her: What advice would you give young Latina women aspiring to work in nonprofit associations or similar fields?
Here's her full advice: "You should recognize and embrace your unique perspective that enriches the work that you do. You should also build a strong network. Connect with mentors, peers, and professionals in the field of work. Cultivate, nurture, and grow those relationships. Networking opens doors and provides support along the way. Stay curious and never stop learning. Take advantage of workshops, free courses, cohorts, and resources to expand your skills and knowledge. Don't be afraid to speak up for what you deserve, whether it's a promotion, salary increase, or professional development opportunities.
Working in nonprofits can be rewarding but also demanding and draining. Remember to prioritize your health and well-being to sustain your passion and effectiveness in creating an impact. When challenges arise, stay resilient as it will carry you through. Stay focused on your goals and keep pushing forward."
✨ Now, we'd love to hear from you: ✨

🌍 Happy International Women's Day! 🌍
Today, we honor the incredible achievements of women around the globe while acknowledging the journey ahead towards gender equality. This day serves as a powerful reminder of how far we've come and the work that remains to ensure every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive.
In the spirit of #InternationalWomensDay, I've been reflecting on the theme of investing in oneself. As we celebrate the progress and resilience of women everywhere, I'm reminded of the importance of personal and professional growth. Investing in ourselves—whether through education, health, taking on new challenges, or embracing change—is fundamental to unlocking our full potential.
As we commemorate today, let's commit to supporting one another, lifting each other up, and investing in our growth. The path to equality is paved with the collective efforts of individuals who dare to dream, act, and inspire change.
Here's to a future where every woman's potential is recognized and nurtured. Let's continue to break barriers, build bridges, and invest in the best version of ourselves.
