This is me. This is when I found myself sitting at a table full of fellow WOC Career Coaches ready to learn and lean on each other at Dielle Charon McMillan-Wallace's Emancipation event in DC this month. 2 of my values as a coach are community and curiousity. This means: 📌 I will always want to be in-the-room with others 📌 I will often ask a question before giving an answer 📌 I'm ALWAYS a coach - this doesn't mean I coach people mid-convo without consent. It means that I'm always seeing the opportunity for you to understand yourself better before I offload all my opinions on what I think you should do 📌 When I'm listening I'm truly listening and locked-in 📌 I will board a flight and travel xxx miles to connect with like-minded folks - always 📌 I will always create rooms and spaces for like-minded folks to connect and inspire one another in the bright times and shadowy times alike This is me...Always handsy 😅 p.s. Happy #FeelGoodFriday Everyone! Another amazing summer event to feel good about, and another warm thank you to give! Thank you so much to the nine hiring managers and recruiters from our fantastic employer partners, HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan), OMERS and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan for hosting an amazing Pension Group event and conducting mock interviews with our scholars. Not only did the scholars learn more about the companies and their cultures, they also garnered invaluable insights about joining these dynamic teams. Here are just a few of the highlights: The session kicked off with some great networking and delicious pizza while attendees took in the beautiful view of Lake Ontario from the HOOPP office. Our scholars had the chance to practice their elevator pitch and answer common interview questions, honing their skills to perfection. The hiring managers and recruiters generously provided unique and relevant feedback to help improve our scholars chances of success no matter which career path they choose. We’d also like to give a BIG shout out to all of the scholars who attended and took the initiative to level up their interview game while investing in themselves and their futures! As we begin to wrap up our 4-week Essential Skills program with N'Quatqua, we celebrate the achievements of our students, as well as the local business partners who invited us into their spaces to tour their organizations. This WINsday’s post is dedicated to our wonderful winning speakers that shared their time, talent and treasure with our CORE students. CORE (Career Opportunities in Real Estate) is an eight module, workforce development program designed specifically to promote career awareness and attract underrepresented populations to the real estate industry. Part of what lights me up is introducing my colleagues to over 200 students in our Spring 2024 cohort. These students represent over 350 colleges and universities in 46 states. Lastly, Karen reminded us that the graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take the first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream. I had so much fun presenting "The Power of Productivity" to WESTPACS members! Here are some highlight tips: - Always schedule "travel time" between meetings even if you work remotely. It allows you to gather your thoughts from the last meeting, making tasks, and preparing for the next meeting or project time. - Schedule your project time as if it was a very important appointment with a very important person! - Allow for 30% of your day for interruptions. #StaffSpotlight: Jatnna Amador, CMP is a Senior Policy and Training Events Manager at J-PAL North America, where she manages the implementation of key policy and training events. Learn more about how she uses her background to increase equity and accessibility in her work. How does your role at J-PAL North America relate to your background? I received my bachelor’s in Communications and Africana Studies, so I have always been passionate about social justice, educational access, and equity. My master’s was in Higher and Post-secondary Education, in which I again focused on education access and how to best support students. At J-PAL North America I organize events and I was able to launch the Economics Transformation Project, a program that aims to foster a more diverse and equitable field of economics by providing inclusive resources for Black, Indigenous, and Latino/a/e students at every stage of learning and advancement. It is exciting to use my background in education access and event planning to design this program. What would people never guess you do in your role? I chair the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Working Group which previously included both our internal and external DEI work, but is now more focused on our internal priorities. This shift was an opportunity to restructure the working group into three subcommittees. One subcommittee is the Special Projects subcommittee, which developed our annual climate survey to better understand our current work culture. It was launched last year, refined this year, and will now run bi-annually to highlight what we are doing well and uncover areas of improvement. What valuable career lesson have you learned so far at J-PAL North America? I have learned to communicate more effectively and I have gained the confidence to provide my ideas, insights, and feedback more consistently. I now feel equipped to advocate for myself, my team members, and for the work we do and I’ve been able to improve these skills because J-PAL’s culture allows for constant growth. What’s something you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t yet? One thing I want to do is travel internationally again,—although I have a toddler, which complicates things! I really want to visit Italy for the first time to try authentic Italian pizza. However, before visiting Italy, I want to master the art of eating at a restaurant with my toddler. I’ve asked other parents for advice and brainstormed items to bring to keep him busy. With practice, I hope to accomplish this dream in the near future!

The last couple of weeks have been hectic, mainly due to the amount of external activity working “heads out” as we say at Farrat! Highlights included: Participation in the Trafford college group advisory board event, discussing and influencing the future of T-levels - an initiative we’re proud to support at Farrat with our T-level students. Attending the HR Inner Circle annual conference, enjoying brilliant guest speakers giving insight on a variety of topics, and keeping abreast of what’s going on and coming up within my professional industry. Visiting the University of Salford to discuss the possibilities for a strategic partnership with Farrat, to build on the foundations we’ve already put in place with the launch of our Farrat-Pemberton Scholarship earlier this year. Having the privilege of being invited to officially cut the ribbon on behalf of Farrat at the newly refurbished G-Force community cafe, Farrat being the largest donor to the refurbishment project to help secure the future of the community cafe. It’s been a full on few weeks of external activity, and it can often feel like this impacts negatively on the “heads down” work that just needs to get done. A day out of the office means frantic catching up with emails and the day-to-day routine when you’re back. But it’s so important that we don’t lose sight of the enormous value that our external activity, and looking outwards from the business, brings us. It provides valuable insight and experience to influence and sustain future activity, and gives us the opportunity to see the real difference we’re making, and can make in the future, to our industry and communities. So the next time I have such a full-on diary of being heads out, instead of thinking about the emails stacking up, I’ll continue to embrace the opportunities that an external lens gives me to appreciate our impact and to shape the strategy and focus for the future. #beyondthejob #alwayslearning #externallens
