This is my last week at UC Berkeley School of Law as a visiting scholar. I am extremely happy with what I have I accomplished during this period studying in this very prestigious institution. I finished writing the book “Antiracist Legal Education: Law, Justice, and Social Transformation”, which proposes a reformulation of the Brazilian legal education through the practice of a politically engaged pedagogy, a necessary step for providing legal actors with the necessary knowledge to use law as an instrument of social emancipation. I also wrote a very, very long essay called “Women, Race and Law: On the Constitutional Basis of Black Feminism”. This piece seeks to answer an important question: the individualistic basis of the principle of freedom, a perspective based on the understanding of this precept as a possibility of free action in the private sphere, provides the necessary elements for emancipation in a historical moment in which group membership largely determines access to rights? I propose on this book an interpretation of freedom based on black feminists’ rights demands centered on the idea of intersectionality, a parameter that I used to read the Constitution as a program of collective emancipation. I specifically came to Berkeley to write the book “Why Humans Beings Suffer? A Psychological Theory of Fundamental Rights”, a work in which I elaborate an account of how we should interpret the right to psychological integrity based on the sociology of mental health. I still had time to finish the editing process of the book Antidiscrimination Law and Race Relations: Themes and Proposals”, which will be published in August. Many thanks to Mackenzie Presbyterian University and to the University of California, Berkeley - School of Law for their institutional support! It was an intense, but WONDERFUL semester! #law #legaleducation #blackfeminism #intersectionality #justice #socialjustice
