There is no question that ADCOLOR Conference and Awards is a powerful force for good. The organization has and will continue to deliver tangible results. The dedication of its mission-aligned leadership absolutely cannot be celebrated, admired, and revered enough. That’s the truth. It is also true that while fair, $4,000 for a 3 day conference prices out ascending marketing and advertising talent of color who are not able to access company sponsorship, freelancing, in between roles, recently laid off… ADCOLOR’s own research underscores this reality. (Great coverage by Luz Corona, MPS for Adweek in comments) I know I’m preaching to the choir, but who better to preach to than believers? What could it look like for more people of color in the #marketingandadvertising industry to benefit from an experience that could be the very springboard that makes paying full price next year a piece of cake? When planning an exhibit it can be convenient to dilute the impact of LEDs down to "just a big video screen", especially when a restrictive budget crimps creativity. "Oh it's just a big video, stick with the monitor." It's unfortunate few event teams are educated on the various applications and use cases able to highly improve the booth presence and performance. “Lights. Camera. Coffee Machine.” The toys are dreaming of breaking the internet. Can you guess what ad I’m talking about? If you guessed Argos, I owe you a coffee (good look claiming that bad boy). The & Partnership got a lot right when they cooked up this 30-second wonder. First off, props for actually telling customers what you sell — toys, tech and homeware. It sounds silly, but a lot of brands don’t do this with their Xmas ads, *Cough Cough* John Lewis. Then we’ve got the embracing of the TikTok-obsessed youth of today and their passion for dance. Argos have relatability down at a time when parents are sourcing gifts. I also love how Argos subtly show us the products they sell — we’ve got a coffee machine pumping mist into the scene. A hairdryer makes an appearance as a wind machine. And, of course, the whole thing is filmed on a Google Pixel by Trev, the friendly dinosaur. I’ve got to admit the ending made me chuckle. And as an Ad Grad, I’m not afraid to admit it. But does it make me want to shop at Argos? Put it this way. At AXPONA 2024 I spoke with many Magico customers and prospective owners and I relearned something I had forgotten: Many people build out their stereo systems over a period of several years, perhaps buying one major component each year until they have the system finished. If the process lasts five years on average, the person will hold onto that stereo system without making too many changes for another five years or so. That's a turnover of components every ten years. Certainly this doesn't describe everyone. There are those that can purchase an entire system all at once. However, I don't think that's the norm. If someone is going to research and audition loudspeakers for a purchase that will last them ten years or more, making the right decision initially becomes critical. A wrong move when it comes to speakers can ruin the high-end experience for a buyer very quickly. Here's to making the right call the first time. #Magico
