'The House of God' was a very popular book among doctors, early in my career; reportedly it has sold more than 2 million copies. I recently reread this book and posted a review on Goodreads. John Updike wrote in his Introduction, "The House of God is a book to relieve you of your illusions about doctors…” As if to prove Updike’s point, the novel is most famous for introducing the non-medical world to one of the worst patient slurs of my medical era, Gomer. Derived from the acronym, Get Out of My Emergency Room, Gomer was not invented by Samuel Shem (the author’s pseudonym), but he codified it, and gave it voice, encouraging the notion that it is appropriate vernacular. Shem’s hero, the Fat Man, defines the term, “gomers are human beings who have lost what goes into being human.” I am sorry to have ever used the term gomer. Another acknowledgment of my imperfection, and another encouragement for change. #doctor #medicine #professional #medicalschool #purpose #meaning #ethics #empathy #compassionatecare https://lnkd.in/gzvdSRz3
