Who would have thought that Texas would surge past California in large-scale solar generation? ✅ From 2 GW of large scale solar plants in 2019 to 23.6 GW (May 2024). ✅ Building and connecting new renewable projects in Texas is much easier than in other parts of the country and is a major reason for the state's clean energy boom. ✅ The rest of the country takes twice as long as Texas to bring new power generation online. #decarbonization #cleanenergy #solar #wind #renewableenergy #greenenergy

In 2021, bp combined Gas and Power Operations and challenged us to find optimization opportunities and synergies across our team. As we continue that journey, the reasoning behind becomes more evident. Supporting the natural gas and power flow across North America requires a cohesive team, especially as we support the transition goals toward renewables. This recent article from the Financial Times highlights that transition, specifically in Texas, as for the first time Texas generated more electricity from solar power than from coal. I am proud to be a part of that journey. #energytransition #solar #naturagas #power #bp #netzero #renewables

California is demonstrating that renewable energy can supply a state-wide grid for at least part of the day for over a month. The grid did not collapse or shut down as many anti-renewable groups had predicted. As solar grows rapidly in Texas, we are seeing a larger and larger percentage of daytime power generated from wind and solar. With batteries, the solar supply can be extended into late afternoon and perhaps early evening.

When the latest batch of solar plants come on line, Texas will have added more solar capacity per capita in a single year than any US state and any country in the world. In March, for the first time, Texas generated more electricity from solar power than from fossil sources and just last week Texas briefly hit 19.1 gigawatts of energy generation from solar farms setting a new US-wide record. Much of the economic gain has gone directly to rural counties that have scarce other resources to generate revenue. Despite accounting for only a tiny portion of the state’s population, rural counties will receive more than 60 per cent of the tens of billions of dollars expected to flow into Texas from renewables and storage over the coming years. (There is evidence that the IRA is contributing to the TX boom. For example, the IRA investment map tracker includes 12 battery facilities announced in TX since IRA, and 16 solar.) The ease of building and connecting new renewable projects in Texas relative to elsewhere has been one of the key reasons for the state’s clean energy boom. Its electricity grid operator uses a “connect and manage” model. This assesses new projects based on the essential local requirements needed to connect to the grid instead of carrying out protracted studies into the broader potential ramifications. In ERCOT, interconnection developers take studies conducted by the grid operator and use them to assess their curtailment risk. “And then they decide whether or not to proceed, and if they do, they’ll bear that curtailment risk. And of course, we’re seeing many generators deciding they can take that risk.”

We have big climate challenges and need to move faster to develop and deploy renewables. Good news! The Federal Energy Regulatory Agency (FERC) one of those Federal Agencies - most American do not follow - just passed a rule to dramatically increase the speed of interconnection studies and approvals. I have been developing renewable energy, solar+ storage and storage assets since 2008 and I can tell you this backlog and maze of unknown costs, timelines and process is a major hinderance to renewable development and deployment. Under this new FERC rule Utilities and Grid Operators will face penalties for delays and roadblocks. Over 8 Million Renewable jobs in America and counting - with strong new policies like this Interconnection reform and the Inflation Reduction Act - we can meet our Climate Challenges, create millions of more jobs and set up our future generations for a livable planet. Energy storage allows clean power to be stored and used in all hours of the day. In Utah, #ACPMember rPlus Energies is quadrupling the amount of energy storage on its Green River Energy Center site. It is also doubling the power the project can generate from 200 MW to 400 MW. The Salt Lake Tribune dives in to the project and the energy storage trends. https://bit.ly/43IgvWX

Bobby Tudor and Steve Kean have the right idea: being an energy leader means leading on all kinds of energy. As they point out, solar power and other renewables have a key role to play in our fast-growing energy future. More than that, consumer-focused strategies like rooftop solar panels and battery storage systems that give customers unprecedented power over their energy lives. They also lessen Texans’ dependence on the grid, freeing up electricity for others who need it. Texas, traditionally known for its oil dominance, is emerging as a renewable energy leader in the United States! In 2022, the state generated an impressive 15% of the country's electricity from renewable sources, with wind power propelling Texas to the forefront of clean energy production. Even though it continues to have a significant fossil fuel presence, Texas embraces the windswept landscapes of the western region, making it an ideal hub for wind energy. Geography plays a crucial role, as the vast and windy expanses of West Texas provide an advantage over other areas. The state's existing transmission capabilities facilitate the efficient harnessing and distribution of wind power to major cities like San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas. Federal subsidies and tax credits have played a pivotal role, making wind power projects financially viable. The opening up of the wholesale market, coupled with Texas' deregulated electricity market and a standalone energy grid (ERCOT), encourages a diverse range of entities to contribute to the grid, fostering economic growth. While Texas serves as an inspiring model for clean energy development, its unique circumstances, including geography and regulatory framework, may pose challenges for replication in other states. As the nation eyes a sustainable future, Texas stands as a beacon of innovation and a source of valuable lessons for the clean energy transition. 🌐🌿 #texas #renewables #cleanenergy #leadership #renewableenergy #sustainability #windpower #solarenergy 🍃💨
