This year, the theme for Earth Day is "Planet vs Plastics", and organisers want the world to use 60% less plastic by 2040. So, how can the world use less plastic, and what would life look like with 60% less plastic? In my opinion, achieving this requires integrating policy reform, advancing biodegradable material technologies, and enhancing recycling techniques. We also need to shift consumer behaviors towards sustainable practices. Microplastics, which are pervasive environmental pollutants capable of entering food chains and impacting human and wildlife health, underscore the urgency of this mission. Envision a future where innovative bioplastics and other sustainable materials replace conventional plastics, drastically reducing pollution and promoting ecological resilience. To make sure I don’t lose sight of why I got into this in the first place, and to ground me after all the meetings in conference rooms and all the video calls, the seminars and events, and the hours spent in front of the computer screen, posting on social media and sending emails, I still make sure I get out and get my hands dirty. The statistics can be overwhelming, but can also become abstract after a while. The sales pitch can become a familiar mantra that you just repeat on demand - you can become distanced from the actual environment, while embroiled in the very struggle to protect it. So alongside the important work of lobbying for plastic neutrality and plastic recycling, I still go out every week to clear trash from the local environment, and several times a year I organise major volunteer cleanup events around the island. As well as doing actual good on the ground, it empowers me to speak on the issues from personal experience. When you see the scale of the problem in your immediate vicinity, it is a lot easier to imagine it scaled up to global proportions, but keeps you focused on the need for local engagement as well.
