The Circulate Initiative's report highlights the fact that investing in plastic waste management and recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions and mitigates the environmental impact of plastic pollution. Furthermore, the report articulates that the production of plastic materials, including oil drilling, refining, and the energy-intensive process of creating plastic products, contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Improper plastic waste disposal such as littering and inefficient waste management practices degrade the plastic into microplastic that releases GHGs resulting in plastic pollution in oceans, rivers, and ecosystems that harm wildlife and exacerbate climate change. Efficient recycling infrastructure and green technologies can prevent plastic waste dumping in landfills and incineration. Investments in such effective plastic waste management instruments will reduce plastic waste infiltration and emissions associated with haphazard and improper plastic waste disposal methods. While virgin plastics production burns large amounts of energy and tampers with environmental balance, recycling plastics conserves energy and protects the environment. A circular economy approach is necessary to design products for recyclability and ensure materials are reused and recycled, reducing the need for new plastic production and minimizing emissions. Investing in recycling and waste management sectors can create jobs that contribute to local economies while keeping pollution and climate change in check. Governments and regulatory bodies play a leading role in promoting sustainable plastic waste management through regulations, incentives, and extended producer responsibility programs. The private sector investing in recycling technologies, sustainable packaging solutions, and waste management infrastructure must scale up plastic recycling efforts. In conclusion, investing in plastic waste management and recycling is a multifaceted and multifunctional strategy that addresses environmental and climate concerns. #greenhousegases #carbonemissions #nomoreplastic #notoplastic #saynotoplastic

Do #cleanup activities make any impact? The answer is: yes and no. They don't, because they don't address the problem at the source. They do, because they help raise awareness about the problem. Now, what is the problem? Is it #plastic? Or is it the way plastic is managed? At Plastic Bank we believe the problem is our attitude towards plastic. It is about using more plastic than needed. It is about not reusing and #recycling plastic. We are proud to work with global companies that not only undertake symbolic initiatives with us, like clean-up days, but also lead the way in rethinking the approach towards plastic at large. Our customers are aware of the plastic pollution problem and their responsibility in addressing it. One of our strongest partnerships is with Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines. In the last three years, this partnership has grown steadily, starting from a small pilot and gradually opening new plastic waste collection points collecting over 700 tons of ocean-bound plastic. While doing so, we've improved the lives of hundreds of impoverished collectors in coastal communities, distributing life-changing benefits involving education, healthcare and nutrition. Last year, we started feeding plastic waste to a Coca-Cola associated recycler. Over 40 million plastic bottles have already been recycled into new Coca-Cola bottles, empowering a world-class example of #circulareconomy in the #Philippines, one of the world's top 5 plastic polluting countries. This is just the beginning. Plastic Bank is quickly approaching 5 billion bottles collected from the #environment globally to date, and every month more companies join our mission to empower Social Recycling in countries that lack waste management infrastructure and are heavily affected by poverty. I encourage every company, small and big, from any industry and geography, to contact us and join us today, to be at the forefront of #impact and #sustainability.

Reducing Plastic Pollution in Cambodia: QOEN Consulting's Strategic Collaboration with CARE Cambodia QOEN Consulting supported CARE Cambodia to meticulously craft a comprehensive Concept Note for a European Union Call For Proposals. The project's overarching goal is to address the escalating issue of plastic waste generated by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) surrounding four pivotal factories. At the core of our initiative is the strategic replacement of conventional plastic packaging with sustainable alternatives, ensuring a tangible impact on the environment and local communities. The project strategically targets the MSME’s and involves workers of these factories, who actively contribute to the daily plastic waste by purchasing food and drink items from local vendors. By collaborating with these vendors, CARE will aim to reduce plastic usage among workers, thereby establishing a ripple effect towards sustainable practices in the broader community. Recognizing the multifaceted nature of plastic pollution, this project goes beyond the factory walls. A key component involves collaboration with both formal and informal waste collectors, colloquially named "Etchai." By developing and pilot-testing sustainable and profitable waste management alternatives, CARE aspires to create a comprehensive solution that encompasses the reduction, reuse, and recycling of plastics in Cambodia. The holistic approach in this project extends to engaging with government entities and forging partnerships to ensure formal waste management processes align with environmental sustainability goals. Simultaneously, we recognize the vital role of informal waste collectors, empowering them to become key stakeholders in the sustainable waste management ecosystem. By involving community members in using a Community Scorecard, information will be collected on the levels of plastic pollution and waste management, which will be further discussed in multi-stakeholder meetings with the local government authorities for policy change and advocacy. This collaborative effort embodies a profound commitment to environmental responsibility, economic empowerment, and community development. By strategically addressing plastic waste within the context of MSMEs and factory workers, the project aims not only to mitigate environmental impact but also to foster economic growth and social resilience within Cambodia. This project serves as a testament to the power of strategic partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals. Through this initiative, CARE Cambodia and QOEN Consulting envision a future where sustainability is not just a concept but a way of life, empowering communities and catalyzing positive transformations for generations to come. #reduceplastic #reduceplasticwaste #proposalwriting #msme #singleuseplastic #communitydevelopment #communityengagement

A Story of Plastic Bottles on the Tables. Are you really caring? I once came to join an event for the anniversary celebration of a well-known international organization that has worked in Cambodia - not less than 30 years - and I was excited to meet many talented activists from different NGOs, civil societies, and some government officials. I was an early bird (one hour before the event started), and no guest arrived there before me. After filling out the registration form, I grabbed some reports and magazines published by the organizer. The report discussed various topics that related to environmental issues - particularly waste management and natural resource management - social inequality, governance, and democracy. I observed that the arrangement for the event was great, yet there were plastic bottles placed everywhere on the tables. I walked toward two staff of the organizing team and told them politely, “It is not appropriate to have water bottles on the tables, and they should have been removed.” I thought such an event could be an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and promote the movement of plastic reduction and support our government policies and campaigns on plastic reduction, especially a recent campaign entitled “ Today, I don’t use plastic bags,” initiated by the MOE. The two staff walked away, smiled, and said nothing to me. I was so disappointed and uncomfortable, and I returned to my seat and enjoyed reading those reports and magazines. By doing screening skills, I suddenly found a topic entitled “ How Cambodia Tackles Its Waste: A Closer Look”. 🤓 The report also suggests several recommendations and solutions to improve waste management policies and practices in Cambodia, including measures for combating plastic pollution. Then, I smiled and enjoyed a cup of Coca-Cola without ice. And I asked myself some questions: [1] Did I do the right thing? If I did so, why didn’t they respond to me and walk away? [2] Were they staff of that organization? I guessed so because I saw them in a group photo presented in a magazine I grabbed earlier. [3] Did they actually read their reports, magazines, and leaflets shared during the event? Some areas of their work in the reports were also about waste management and combating plastic pollution.
