President & CEO at Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board

In a vital step forward for our local economy, the City of Los Angeles' City Council voted to approve the recommendation to proceed with AEG and Plenary Group on the modernization and expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center. While there is still significant work ahead, this is a major milestone in giving our community the Center it deserves, with positive long-term impacts for every LA region, neighborhood, and household! Mayor Karen Bass issued the following statement reiterating the project's importance in reinvigorating our local economy: “We are continuing to move Los Angeles forward. I want to commend the City Council for taking this important step toward modernizing and expanding the Los Angeles Convention Center as we invest to revitalize Downtown. This is more than just one building – we are laying the groundwork to attract tourists and business travelers; fill our restaurants, our arenas and to support jobs in Downtown and beyond.” On behalf of the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board team - and the thousands of Angelenos and hundreds of local businesses who depend on citywide conventions for their livelihoods - I'd like to thank the City Council for their leadership on this critical improvement to LA's civic infrastructure. That includes the Trade, Travel and Tourism Committee chaired by Councilmember Traci Park, and the Budget & Finance Committee chaired by Councilmember Bob Blumenfield. I'd also like to recognize City Administrative Officer (CAO) Matt Szabo, Chief Legislative Analyst (CLA) Sharon Tso, and the City's Chief Tourism Officer Doane Liu for their countless hours of due diligence in assessing the necessity and impacts of the Center expansion. Over the next six months, the CAO and CLA teams will be working closely with AEG/Plenary to confirm that the project can be completed by early 2028 as our City of Angels prepares to host the LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games. While there's still work to do, today’s vote is a testament to the fact that – when our community comes together around a common goal – we can achieve incredible things.
