Dear Next Government, Want to deliver better outcomes for Britain? Here’s how! With very little money in the kitty and an endless set of needs across the public sector, the importance of being able to do more for less has never been clearer. Social Finance has been working for 17 years to change systems so they can deliver the best outcomes for people with whatever resources they have. Now at the start of a new era in British politics, we’ve identified three priority areas where there is incredible opportunity to do better: ● Employment & Skills. 2.8 million people are out of work with a health issue, costing the government billions, holding back the economy and causing a devastating impact to countless families. We've worked for a decade to scale up evidence-based programmes to help people back to work. The next government can go even further by linking support to regional and local growth plans; offering person-led support to help people develop their skills; and removing barriers to employment ● Children & Young People. The mental health crisis in our schools; the impact of social media; the unmet need of children with special education needs. These are just some of the challenges the next government will face to enable children and young people to live better lives. We need to create systems where every child is seen and safe; where schools, health, and social care are joined up; and where we stop seeing children as the problem and start focusing on how the system can do better to support them before crisis happens. ● Health & Social Care. We need to shift healthcare from hospitals to the community and from crisis to prevention. Making that happen is not easy, but we have shown it is possible. Social investment puts up-front funding in community-based and preventative services while keeping a laser-like focus on outcomes. That means outcomes for patients and outcomes for health systems that reduce demand and save money. All three of our priority areas come with actions to make change happen, built on our experience of what is working and how. We passionately believe that the next government can drive meaningful change on some of the most important and complex societal challenges, even in a tough economic climate. But doing so will require using smart tools, like social investment; a relentless focus on evidence and outcomes; and a holistic, system-eye view of the problem. We stand ready to support whoever is in power to make lasting change to the benefit of everyone, but especially with and for those furthest away from support. Great article Adam and totally agree. Unfortunately, too much of the resource that is needed within local government and in local communities to support this is tied up in the increased number of central government roles in recent years whilst local government has seen its roles depleted and services cut to a core in many areas. Lets hope that the next government, whatever colour, or blend of colours addresses these issues raised...
