Sudan is facing one of the world’s biggest hunger and displacement crises. According to a new report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, more than a year of conflict has caused the worst levels of acute food insecurity in Sudan’s history. “The magnitude of this crisis requires a coordinated and sustained response to avoid an even greater humanitarian catastrophe,” said Samy Guessabi, Action Against Hunger’s Sudan Country Director. Nearly one year after the start of the war in Sudan, the conflict has had catastrophic impacts on almost every aspect of day-to-day life for the Sudanese population. The numbers are staggering. More than 8.2 million people have fled their homes since the conflict started on April 15, 2023, earning Sudan the title of the world’s largest displacement crisis. Today, close to 25 million people (around half of the population) are in immediate need of assistance, including 18 million people facing acute food insecurity. A new report released today by the International Rescue Committee shares the stories of individuals and families who have been forced to flee their homes—seeking refuge in neighbouring states in Sudan or in neighboring countries—and whose experiences reflect the myriad of challenges faced by millions of Sudanese today. https://lnkd.in/dxDWkdHk

Latest UN briefing about the #humanitarian situation in #Gaza: · OCHA: Gaza’s Middle Area was largely disconnected from the south, following Israeli forces’ prevention of movement, including of humanitarian supplies. · Limited aid distributions, primarily of flour and water, took place [Sunday] in the Rafah governorate in Gaza. · In the adjacent Khan Younis governorate, aid distribution largely stopped due to the intensity of hostilities. · Grave concerns about waterborne diseases due to water consumption from unsafe sources persist, particularly in the north, where the water desalination plant and the pipeline from Israel was shut down. · World Food Programme: eight weeks into the war, there is a big risk of famine for all of Gaza’s people, including for those with chronic diseases, older persons, children and people living with disabilities. https://lnkd.in/dKBZ6CKt

After 9 years of conflict, Yemen remains one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Below is a snapshot of the dire situation: In 2024, 18.4 million people - over 55% of Yemen's population - will need humanitarian support. This includes 4.5 million people who are currently displaced within the country, many of whom have been displaced more than once. Often, families are forced to relocate to overcrowded camps with inadequate shelter, poor hygiene facilities, and no clean water. Tragically, Yemenis are also facing the consequences of climate change. In recent years, climate-related events have become the leading cause of new displacements as droughts, floods, and cyclones push thousands of people from their homes. These figures paint a grim picture, but there is hope. Displacements due to conflict are down by 83%, and a period of relative calm has allowed for small improvements throughout the country. Despite this, there is still a long way to go before peace will completely settle over Yemen. In the meantime, we will continue to work with our partner to provide shelter, and restore people's dignity and privacy. 🌏 Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. In this recent piece in “The Conversation,” our colleague Oliver K. Kirui writes about food insecurity and displacement in Sudan: “Sudan’s food security has dramatically worsened due to ongoing conflict and economic decline. As of mid-2024, over 20.3 million people (more than 42% of the population) are facing high levels of acute food insecurity. […] The conflict has displaced people, too, placing Sudan in the highest displacement crisis in the world. This has further strained food resources as displaced populations seek refuge in regions where resources are already scarce. The latest UN reports indicate a humanitarian crisis. Around 9.2 million people have been displaced since mid-2023.” Read more: https://ow.ly/4BY350SmpgA CGIAR #WithRefugees #Sudan #Crisis #FoodCrisis

Sudan is on the brink of a severe food crisis, potentially the world's largest. An emergency wheat production project, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) with $75 million and implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP), has increased wheat production by nearly 70% in five states, meeting 22% of national demand. Despite the ongoing conflict, this initiative has significantly improved food security for 16,000 displaced farmers, providing resources like climate-resilient seeds and harvesters. Yet, 2.1 million people urgently need humanitarian aid. #Sudan #SevereFoodCrisis #WorldLargest #WheatProductionProject #AFDB #WFP #IncreasedWheatProduction #SignificantlyImprovedFoodSecurity #DisplacedFarmers

As we mark #WorldHungerDay this week, we look at the devastating level of food insecurity in Yemen. Localised conflict, economic warfare and disruption to humanitarian assistance are driving an alarming food crisis in the southern Arabian peninsula. The World Food Programme’s Global Report on Food Crises 2024 shows that Yemen is a country with Acute Food Insecurity, with more than 56% of the population - and rising - facing starvation. This is one of the five worst crises in terms of food insecurity in the world today, with extreme weather also contributing to a dire situation. Concern launched an official programme in #Yemen this year, designed to meet the most urgent needs of the most vulnerable people.
