"In 2022, Keystone Human Services launched a Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Action to create a National Disability inclusive Relief and Response Hot Line for Ukrainians who have fled to Moldova. This hotline connects people with services to meet both short- and long-term needs. Within 6 months of its launch, more than 1500 called the National Hot Line service. Eight mobile units were established and provided support to more than 3,000 Ukrainians across Moldova, most of whom were women with disabilities. As we continue to stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, this humanitarian crisis remains a top priority." He convinced her to join him in Turkey and, thinking they would be happy together, four days after her 18th birthday she flew out to meet him.” This is precisely what I argued on my research (you can find it here https://lnkd.in/dGd_hm2v): many women were groomed and tricked to join IS. Their joining was, in some cases, motivated by an often-extreme need for subsistence, being influenced and manipulated by the wrong people at the wrong moment. Frequently, recruiters exploited their feelings of alienation and discrimination as a result of years of inadequate implementation of social inclusion policies that take into account long-term socioeconomic factors and promotes long-term welfare based on the sense of belonging to the community, and consequently intends to reduce the social inequality and feelings of injustice. This, together with the constant feeling of failure to achieve what was dreamed or expected by society, could have brought feelings of anger, disillusionment and loss of significance, which played a critical push factor that led those women into IS.   Therefore, I argued that deradicalising women without solely imprisonment them, but rather through an effective rehabilitation and resocialisation program, can, among other benefits, help in preventing further waves of radicalisation. Abandon them in Al-Hol or in any other camp, is not a solution. If countries decide not to face the returnees’ challenges and simply abandon or prosecute them without any deradicalisation and rehabilitation program or keep them out by revoking their citizenship, in a long-term period, it will only contribute to the spread of extremist ideologies. From a security perspective, doing nothing is the worst of all options, having more negative consequences than positive.

📍 PRESS RELEASE: On 15 August 2023, it will be two years since the Taliban took power in #Afghanistan. The country is no longer at war, but the humanitarian situation remains extremely difficult. Many children still have no access to education or medical care. For girls in particular, the situation is increasingly hopeless. In the absence of political dialogue between the de facto authorities and the international community, deliberate attempts are being made to limit the work of humanitarian organisations. This can be seen in the ban on NGOs employing Afghan women in sectors other than #health, or the decision to no longer allow international NGOs to work in community education. As we approach the two-year anniversary of Taliban takeover, it's imperative to reflect on the harm the Taliban has done to women and families in Afghanistan. #AfghanWomen have been banned from working with all local and international NGOs with exemptions only for health, nutrition, and education. Last month, the Taliban also declared that beauty salons, one of the last remaining places for women to work and congregate outside the home, must close. Women's movement has also been restricted, preventing them from going more than 46 miles from their home, boarding an airplane without a mahram (approved male family member), visiting parks, and even visiting cemeteries. The United Nations has reported that almost two-thirds of the Afghan population are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, and that four million people are acutely malnourished, including 3.2 million children under the age of five. Those who were able to flee find themselves in political limbo, trapped in appalling conditions in other countries with difficulty achieving legal status. These are just a few of the challenges faced by women and families in #Afghanistan, as reported in this Human Rights Watch article. Did you know: 50% of #refugees are women, but only 4% of UN projects are targeted at #women and #girls. And only 1% of funding to fragile states went to women’s groups or women’s ministries. Gender #inequalities are often exacerbated in crisis: 🔴 60% maternal deaths take place in conflict , displacement scenarios. 🙉 🔴 1 in 5 refugees or displaced #women in complex humanitarian settings are estimated to have experienced sexual violence.🙊 🔴 Girls are often the first to be pulled out of school as parents find ways to alleviate economic burdens, depriving girls of the fundamental rights to #education. 🙈 Today is world #humanitarian day. How much does it take to solve humanitarian crisis worldwide - 48 billion USD/year. Let’s talk about an example- Amazon gross #profit for the twelve months ending June 30, 2023 was $244 billion, a 18.22% increase year-over-year. How much #tax paid? Not a lot. 6% in the US and practically nothing in the U.K. So an easy solve. But are we brave enough to demand action❣️ #equitymatters

Women’s rights organizations in Ukraine and throughout the region mobilized rapidly in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Two years later, they continue to provide a vital yet increasingly frayed lifeline to millions of displaced women and children.  But, though the people of Ukraine have shown tremendous resiliency, humanitarian funding has not. While 78% of survey respondents have expanded their services since the invasion, over 50% say that a critical lack of funding and resources threatens vital programs and services for displaced women and girls such as: 🏡 Adequate Housing  💵 Economic Support and Opportunities   👩⚕️ Gender-Based Violence Services  ✍ Counselling  ⚖ Legal Advice   VOICE and HIAS's latest report highlights how a lack of adequate resourcing and support has put immense pressure on many women’s rights organizations, many of whom are concerned about their capacity to continue supporting women and vulnerable populations from their communities in addition to those displaced by the war.  HIAS Ukraine stays committed to localization efforts to ensure adequate funding of women-led organizations. We at HIAS Ukraine call on other INGOs, governments, and agencies to join our message to transform the humanitarian system into a more gender-inclusive, locally-led, and globally coordinated system by providing vital resources to WROs.
