Great to join Lisa Jakimciw for the NPC (New Philanthropy Capital) launch of their new report on the youth mental health crisis and how the surge in demand is affecting charities. A packed out room shows just how much this issue is firing people up. Lots of synergy here with the work of The Children's Society and their early intervention mental health hubs - giving children and young people walk-in access to mental health support and other holistic care - before they reach the point of crisis. Always a fan of a good visual image, I loved Ndidi Okezie describing teachers - now expected to perform multiple essential functions - as Swiss Army penknives. The pressure on schools to cope with this epidemic is insupportable and the decimation of youth services have deprived too many vulnerable children of the trusted adult they need outside of school and family. Some interesting takeaways on the need to understand more about how other countries, who have experienced similar perma crises, are coping with this issue. Why are British children among the unhappiest in Europe? Looking forward to more conversations on our major appeal #npcthinks #mentalhealth #childmentalhealth #philanthropy

It's #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek and the topic for 2024 is #MyVoiceMatters We will share some top tips from Marijana, our Familly Support Lead, about how to empower children to accept their own feelings, follow their instincts and interests, use their voices to share ideas and inspire others. Empowering children in this way can have a positive impact on their health and wellbeing. Place2Be, one of the UK’s leading children’s mental health charities, states that children and young people who feel that their voices are heard have higher levels of self-esteem. Tip 1 - Validate their feelings

Charities can do great things, but sometimes the most powerful impact we can have is when we work together. We’ve been honoured to work with the Charlie Watkins Foundation and Boys In Mind on our partnership project, “In our own words”. This is a pack of free resources for parents, teachers and anyone who supports a child or young person. Whilst our own clinical mental health trainer Sarah Ashworth wrote a written guide, the other two charities produced a series of video interviews with young people. Talking to both primary and secondary school children, we asked them what the most important things were that adults could do to support them through difficult feelings. The video series gathers together all their suggestions for how to help a child with: 🧡 worrying 💙 sadness 🧡 anger 💙 the challenges of growing up 🧡 encouraging them to talk about their problems. We also created two video scenarios exemplifying a helpful and a not-so-helpful conversation between an adult and a child. This was a mammoth project for three relatively small charities to accomplish, but, utilising each organisation’s strengths and working together, we have managed to create a pack which we hope will provide valuable support and information for many parents and teachers to come. Thank you so much to Charlie Watkins and Boys in Mind for working so hard and allowing us to be a part of this team effort! 🧡💙 Check out the resource and videos: https://lnkd.in/gDmYtv_8 . . . . . . . . #CharlieWallerTrust #MentalHealthCharity #SmallCharities #ChildrensMentalHealth #YoungPeoplesMentalHealth #StudentMentalHealth #ParentingTips #ParentingHacks #ParentingAdvice #ParentingTeens #ParentingBoys #ParentingGirls #ParentingTalk #TeacherTips #TeacherLife #TeacherProblems #TeacherAdvice #TeacherResources #YouthMentalHealth #YouthMentalHealthAwareness

Step Up Parents' 2023 Annual Report chronicles our achievements and advancements during a busy and impactful year. In 2023, our catchment area grew to include New Hampshire and an expansion into York County, Maine, and we experienced an increased need for services and helped more families than ever before. Step Up Parents also brought on new staff and board members to help us chart a course for a strong, effective future. Most importantly, the 2023 Annual Report highlights the people who make Step Up Parents so special: kinship caregivers who have stepped up to raise children profoundly impacted by parental substance use disorder. These stories illustrate why Step Up Parents is such an important part of the network that supports kinship families in Maine and New Hampshire. Read our 2023 Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/e7cRkVPK
