The ACLU-MN and Ballard Spahr at the Hennepin County government center after arguing three motions in the MNCOGI v. City of Minneapolis case. MNCOGI argue that by labeling disciplinary actions as “coaching,” the city is shielding data about police misconduct — and how it is (or is not) addressed — from public access and scrutiny. #LegalNews #ACLU

This is a great read for public leaders on any level. While it focuses on public safety there are many valuable lessons for all front-line supervisors. Leaders must be aware of issues that employees face and how they can affect their well-being. Creating a culture that supports, and cares, for its employees will in turn create a more effective organization.
POLICE CHIEF: Subject Matter Expert - Police Procedures and Use of Force <> Trained Police Officers and Police Instructors from 235 Police Agencies From Across the Nation and 34 Countries Globally.
This is a must read for police and city leaders… “The past few years have been tumultuous for the law enforcement industry. Police professionals are acutely aware of the upheavals brought about by 2020. Officers and agencies are currently deeply engaged in efforts to rebuild public trust, ensure public safety and reform criminal justice. On top of these challenges, most departments nationwide and internationally face ongoing struggles with recruitment and retention…. The recent focus on first responder wellness has underscored the importance of resilience, transitioning from a viewpoint held by a few to a widely acknowledged truth among police leadership: the health of officers is paramount. An officer in good health is not only more effective but also more caring, compassionate, patient, diligent, professional, capable and reliable.” https://lnkd.in/gRKvcCQ6

Police Consultant ~ Managing Partner of C6 Consultants. We specialize in Analysis, Auditing, Community Policing Programs, and Investigations of Improper conduct.
City Managers/Chiefs, POLICE1 has published the results of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals of the Braun v. Vill of Palatine case, which revolves around an accident investigation resulting in a DUI arrest (after a test returns negative for alcohol and drugs). After reviewing the case you can see where a few more questions or observations would have possibly made a big difference in the outcome. This would be a good case to have your District/County Attorney's Office review and suggest possible steps to take to prevent this type of litigation. At the very least, review your policy regarding this type of investigation by your personnel. A good roll call training would go a long way in safeguarding your personnel and the community, especially public perception. #CommunityPolicing, #Training, #LitigationPrevention, #PublicPerception, #Supervision

Today we published our fifth annual #OutcomesReport showing how our work is helping improve policing. The report covers 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023 and includes: ☑️ decisions we made after our investigations ☑️ the outcomes of #misconduct or #criminal proceedings Independent scrutiny helps identify opportunities to improve policing and builds public confidence in policing. In almost two thirds of our cases last year, none of the officers or staff involved faced an investigation into their conduct. Of the 232 individuals whose conduct we did investigate, 108 (46%) had a case to answer for misconduct or #GrossMisconduct. Further action was taken to improve the performance of 54 individuals who had no case to answer. 80% of disciplinary proceedings, carried out as a result of our independent investigations, led to gross misconduct or misconduct being found proven. 43 cases were found proven at the level of gross misconduct and resulted in 32 people being dismissed without notice.
