#UFZ/#DBFZ team CAPitalize Leaves wins COSUN BEET HACKATHON with Capraferm® process - Congratulations! On 16 & 17 April 2024, 10 research teams competed against each other in Anklam. The task: to find innovative solutions for better utilisation of the side streams that arise during sugar beet processing. The team led by Heike Sträuber won the "Sugar beet leaves" category with the tried-and-tested Capraferm® process. The Cosun Beet Company and WITENO GmbH have jointly launched an innovation competition to find answers to the question of how processing waste from sugar beet can be effectively converted into raw materials for various applications. The sugar factory in Anklam produces around 2 million tonnes of sugar beet every year, resulting in various biogenic residues. The aim is to convert these waste products into valuable resources and transform the sugar factory into a biorefinery. The food of the future focuses on health and low climate footprint. Here, biosolutions, biorefining, fermentation, and microalgae play a key role. The technologies make it possible to convert food waste into new high-value foods or extract protein from residual agricultural resources. Particularly protein is something we will lack in the future. Over 100 food enthusiasts gathered at Danish Technological Institute last week for the annual food conference. Here, they gained insight into how biosolutions are already being used in large Danish companies, and how to implement these solutions in production. Participants also had the opportunity to experience Danish Technological Institute's laboratories and pilot plants, where we help companies develop the foods of the future. 👉 Check out the highlights in the video, where Gry Terrell from the Teknologisk Institut and Mette Holse from Novozymes share their key points from the day.
