🔊 Amplifying Voices: Supporting Non-English Speaking Blind Children I recently had the privilege of listening to Roberto Solis, a remarkable sophomore at Queens College, share his journey as a visually impaired student from an immigrant household. His story highlights a critical issue we must address: "I started learning English from then. And I took speech classes all throughout elementary school, speech and ESL classes. Because I remember for my first two years, I would say, especially of elementary school, there were sometimes assignments that I wouldn't understand and I would get completely wrong. And there would be sometimes the teachers would give me specific instructions and I just didn't know, didn't completely understand what she was saying. And I didn't know there was a translator or anything like that so I couldn't ask for one." Roberto's experience underscores the urgent need for better support systems in our schools for non-English speaking blind children. We must do better to ensure: 🔹 Adequate translation services 🔹 Culturally sensitive educational materials 🔹 Specialized training for educators 🔹 Improved communication with families Let's commit to creating more inclusive educational environments where every child, regardless of visual ability or language background, can thrive. You can access Roberto's story at the following links: 🔹 YouTube: https://lnkd.in/ezNAEuwW 🔹 Website: https://lnkd.in/e8AxFPjg What steps can we take to better support these students? Share your thoughts below. UPDATE: Due to a video snafu, we've incorporated video clips and images to accompany Roberto's audio. A somewhat early plea to all head teachers: for both the reputation of your school and the protection and preservation of the language's authenticity, please only appoint a Deaf BSL user to teach GCSE BSL in your settings. This is not the same concept as a fluent French speaking British teacher delivering French at GCSE level. This is about not diluting a language which has already been suppressed and ignored since forever. I'm a qualified teacher and a confident BSL user with plenty of experience of working with Deaf people, however I am not the right candidate to teach BSL GCSE, as I was born hearing and my first language is English. The only way to enable it to emerge and truly break down barriers your Deaf communities face, is by employing the best person for the job, a Deaf one.
Today we have published the results of our British Sign Language GCSE consultation and subject content🧏 Learning BSL will break down barriers and increase inclusivity in schools, and we'd like to thank parents, teachers and organisations from the deaf and hearing communities for their input. Find out more about the qualification👉https://lnkd.in/eMC35CEH
