I unexpectedly got an email from Mark Zuckerberg. It changed the way I look at business and leadership. It was my second month working at Facebook. At that point, people could add anyone to their Facebook ad account as an admin. The issue was: People were adding Zuckerberg to their ad accounts because, I assume, they thought it’d be funny. He started getting 1000s of notifications about ‘his’ ads. That’s when I got a well-crafted email from Zuck. It was super thoughtful and long—must have taken him noticeable time and energy to put together. His approach was methodical, suggesting possible causes and solutions, showing he took the time to think through the nuances of the product experience. It impressed me. He not only had to manage a 20,000+-person company, but he also took the time to debug, analyze, and write a really thoughtful email that ended up in my inbox. This episode was a revelation about craftsmanship. It showed that he cared about his product and it's so clear that he’s not there just to make money. He cared about making great products and having an empowered culture. That was a good opportunity to reflect on my own style as a leader. If the guy who's running one of the most important companies in the world can take the time to do that, then we can all probably do it as well.

If FACEBOOK is wondering why I don't share many random posts anymore it's because maybe I have no one to make smart people jokes with because all the people in my circles got ultra competitive and started being hired by different top companies the closer we got to running for president age and now if I share nerdy things, no one even comments and I love to joke with myself but it's basically no fun sharing much of anything now. You now I'm friendly enough to talk to strangers, right- why don't nobody wanna talk to me about saving the world anymore? I thought we were friends, but you hired all my friends. PEOPLE WHO WORK AT FACEBOOK BARELY OR DON'T EVEN USE FACEBOOK- why are people this competitive? All the fun young nerds got wrapped up in other stuff. I'm just out here being honest; I'm not even moving super fast or anything and still winning- I hate being on teams with embarrassing slackers.

Very relatable production horror story from Anton Zaides. The lesson I learned from very similar experience (`UPDATE very_important set deleted=1; WHERE condition = rare;`, note the extra semicolon) is to always precede a statement ran on production database with 'BEGIN TRAN'. And then COMMIT or ROLLBACK based on the rows updated (and some other unit-test statements that should be part of the update block). That may create some problems caused by transaction isolation level, but it is nothing compared to the adrenaline jolt of restoring data on a live system. TL/DR: 1. Use transactions. 2. Test your changes.
