Hospice is soooo underutilized in the USA. I believe the average length of stay on hospice is < 100 days, when you can be “on” it for 6 months (& can usually renew for another 6 months if aren’t expected to live much longer). Let’s talk about the benefits of hospice: staying out of the (chronically revolving door) hospital, better quality of life, and better pain control. Less (no) invasive tests. No blood draws. No medications that lead to additional symptoms that need more meds. Let’s talk about hospice. 🙏🏼♥️

For more than 35 years Hospice of Rockingham County has had the privilege of serving, supporting, and caring for patients in Rockingham and surrounding counties who are facing a life-limiting illness. In addition to providing quality end-of-life care (hospice), we also provide palliative care. We refer to that as Serious Illness Care. Our mission is to be a supportive presence for life's journey. Whether it is hospice care or serious illness care, our team recognizes that everyone's journey is different and requires a different level of support. You may not even realize what kind of support you need until you are in the middle of a difficult time. Our healthcare system can be difficult to navigate, medical terminology can be confusing; there is so much information to process. During this time, a family often has hard conversations that can evoke strong emotions. Our goal for this podcast that we are calling Compassionate Conversations is that it will serve as another layer of support for the community that we serve. That support may come in the form of education. It may come in the form of truth-telling to battle some of the misconceptions that exist around end-of-life care. We hope to provide a space to have the hard conversations and answer the difficult questions with compassion, dignity, and respect. ###

The UK General Election is only a few weeks away, CEOs and senior leaders from the Cheshire & Merseyside Hospice Provider Collaborative are calling for: ✅ Recognition that hospice care and support services have a significant impact on local communities and that demand for services is increasing. ✅ A funding review that supports sustainable provision of end-of-life and palliative care services within hospices, across community-settings and in people’s own homes. ✅ NHSE to support the ICBs to work more supportively with hospices to continue to deliver high-quality palliative care, as outlined in the 2022 Health & Social Care Act. ✅ A commitment to maintaining centrally distributed NHSE funding for children’s hospices.   We hope to see meaningful support for adult and children’s hospices in party manifestos. Even though the decision can be difficult to make, choosing hospice allows patients to maintain comfort and dignity during the end of life, while surrounded by their favorite people and things, like President Carter’s favorite – ice cream. The problem is that too many people put off discussing end-of-life care options until it’s too late. There are also many misconceptions about hospice, including the idea that hospice is only for the last few days of life or that choosing hospice means giving up hope. This is not the case: choosing hospice care means taking control of your journey, redefining hope and committing to comfort in the last months of life.” https://lnkd.in/ghbVFQR7

Myth: Hospice = focus on death. Truth: Hospice = focus on quality of life. “Choosing hospice is not necessarily an end to life or giving up on hope. It's just redefining hope and helping navigate a stage of life that is unfamiliar to us because we've never walked that course.” Instead of forcing and fighting, we focus on quality of living. Death is coming - the diagnosis and disease trajectory is unrelenting. Let’s figure out what’s really important and do that as the journey continues.
