Everyone loves summer camp. But what about grief camp? - - Grief is complicated at any age. But it’s especially difficult to know what to do to help a child process the loss of someone close to them. In this piece for The Walrus , one writer shares their experience of volunteering at a bereavement camp for kids. “What I would soon recognize [was] that grief is not an exclusive club, and that everyone, no matter their experience, is invited to its miseries—as well as its joys.” https://lnkd.in/gv9AJTd3 #AgingandEndofLifePlanning #LegacyPlanning #AgingPlanning #EndofLifePlanning #EstatePlanning #FinancialPlanning

Grief support groups are free and available to anyone in the community who has experienced a loss. Generally, they meet once or twice a month year-round. These groups are beneficial because they provide a place to begin sharing your grief with others who have suffered a loss. They also promote building long-term supportive relationships. Development of Compassionate Communities We have received a large number of responses to our survey on Compassionate Communities since it was launched in Spring 2023. We will use what you tell us to inform the key aims of our Compassionate Communities project. Here is some of the feedback that you have kindly shared with us so far: • Nearly 50% of people told us that they felt isolated after a bereavement. • 72% of people felt that a support group made up of people with similar experiences would be of particular help to carers and family members and 55% of people would be interested in supporting such a group. • 64% of people also felt that a telephone support line would be helpful. • 82% of people who had experienced a bereavement told us that the opportunity to share memories of the person who had died helped them and 72% of people found it useful to do something in memory of their loved one. A huge thank you to everyone who has taken the time to complete our survey and to help inform our plans. There is still the opportunity to help shape our work on the development of Compassionate Communities. If you are able to, please log on to our website using the link below and answer a few questions. It should take no more than 5 minutes: https://lnkd.in/eyRY_WWg

Steve says: 'It is evident that funeral ceremonies serve as an essential springboard for managing grief post-funeral. By providing cathartic structure, community support, and emotional expression, funeral ceremonies play a vital role in helping us navigate the complexities of grief.' This is an article from the UK however, we have the same problem here in Australia. We Aussies don't talk much about death in our families and when we do, we joke about it - using expressions like "kicked the bucket", “wearing a wooden onesie”, and even "pushing up daisy's". The English have at least 50 completely different ways of talking about death (and I think we would be similar), suggesting society still has some way to go to feel comfortable about talking about dying, death and bereavement. Help me change the conversation, so we have it more often and are not making fun of dying or those who have died. Instead, let's start a conversation to ensure we are protecting our friends and family by having an up-to-date estate plan. #YodalEstatePlanning http://ed.gr/clsxb

#Funeral poverty "The manager of a north Liverpool credit union recently told me that the most shocking fallout of the recession and austerity was the sheer volume of people calling because they were unable to bury their loved ones. 'People call from the hospital, because they can’t pay the £1,000 to get the undertakers to release the body,' she said. 'And these people, they’re under 50. That’s no age to die.'" [source Dawn Foster, The Guardian] "There are high levels of deprivation and many people struggle. If the unexpected happens, very few people can get their hands on 6k." "I worked with a pawn broker who regularly came across people who would pawn their valuables in order to pay for funerals - sometimes for children – sometimes people couldn’t afford to bury their children." "There are also people who come to us and say that they really want to take care of a funeral, but they can't afford it and they're not eligible for help from the DWP either ..." [source, Jacqueline, Head of Bereavement Services, Lambeth] The Simple Lambeth Funeral is a complete and affordable funeral service and our team provide the following under a single fee: · Funeral arranging This involves collection and care of the deceased, a service at West Norwood Crematorium Chapel as well as the cremation itself. · Collection of the deceased in working hours We will collect the deceased between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday. If a collection out-of-hours is required, there is an out-of-hours number to call. · Organisation of statutory medical papers if required If statutory medical papers are required to release the deceased, we will liaise with the relevant medical or coroner personnel an manage the process. · Provision a coffin suitable for cremation We will also include a simple coffin approved for use in cremations One of the main drivers behind this initiative has been rising poverty driven by austerity and exacerbated by local government funding cuts. Get in touch to find our more and please do share with anyone you think this might be relevant to - we believe that being able to end off family and loved ones with dignity and care regardless of your circumstances is a right that everybody should be afforded. https://lnkd.in/eMwcdc4E

Everyone deserves to feel like this when they're doing the work they love ;-) But seriously, while one-on-one work is deeply fulfilling, and I have such a tender place in my heart for my clients, community grief tending is what we need more of. And it's a joy to be in partnership with the Philly Goat Project, bringing grief walks in nature to the public. #griefwork #griefsupport #griefcoaching #beyourowngoat
