This year, I'm excited to learn more and lean in to launch efforts at GDI to support children in crisis and war as part of a broader portfolio of bringing evidence-based interventions to scale that improve peoples' lives. Research shows social isolation and loneliness contribute to gun violence, radicalization and extremism, and suicidality - demonstrating that advancing social connection is absolutely imperative to our individual and collective well-being. After the 2022 tragedy in Uvalde, TX, our Executive Director, Jillian Racoosin Kornmeier, MPH published a call for prevention, writing: "While we keep pushing those in positions of power to enact policies to protect us and our youth, I challenge us to think about additional routes of prevention – What can we do to reach lonely individuals before they fall prey to violence as an answer for easing pain? Can we build positive social systems in communities where we value others first, before ourselves?" Today, we commend the Surgeon General for releasing his latest advisory - Firearm Violence: A Public Health Crisis in America - which calls for immediate and sustained efforts to address firearm violence through evidence-based public health strategies. We look forward to supporting his efforts by continuing to translate research into practical, actionable strategies to cultivate a socially connected society for all. A new year brings new ways to incorporate healing justice into our systems! Recently the @Louisiana Department of Health (LDOH) announced the release of the Whole Health Louisiana State Plan (2024-2028), through which the LDOH and various state leaders will address the causes and effects of childhood adversity across the state. This process involves a lot of education, training, and continuous self-reflection, yet by becoming trauma-informed, people and communities can create supportive environments that facilitate healing, resilience, and recovery for those affected by trauma. We’re even more excited to announce this plan because our Founder, Dr. Denese Shervington, contributed an article to it entitled, “Moving Beyond Racialized Traumas to Achieve Whole Health for Louisiana.” Throughout history, racial harm has been embedded in our institutions and it has affected both communities that are oppressed and the oppressors themselves.
