It’s about that time of year when families reach out to me with questions about walking on to a college team. Often, student-athletes consider this option when they’ve been admitted to their dream college but failed to receive the recruiting interest they anticipated, fostering the hope that they can earn a spot later on. What most families don’t realize is that these types of walk-on opportunities are rare, and even when they are presented, might not be ideal for a student-athlete’s holistic development. "One Time At Band Camp" 🎙️ Welcome to the first edition of #TuesdayTalksWithJody! Today, I’m opening the vault for a classic. A 'Behind the Scenes' POV. It’s the tale of that one time at Winona State University Scrubs Camp with the @Legacy I3 students. (Scrubs Camp is a week-long residential camp for students who are entering grades 9-12 and wish to explore careers in health care.) This wasn't just any camp; it was a transformative experience focused on empowerment and leadership. And yes, I got up on stage during the talent show. I got up on stage. Yes, there was a knock-knock joke, and yes, there was an original Jody McPhearson single from my unreleased EP. (BTW, some of the young adults knew what an EP was! Super Impressive!). Let's just say, I was a hit! 😄 Why share this? Leadership and empowerment are about more than just serious moments. It's about connecting, showing vulnerability, and yes, having a bit of fun.
