Three of the biggest sports TV companies in the U.S. are creating a joint streaming venture with all of their linear sports TV content, the firms announced Tuesday. Each company — ESPN, Fox Corporation and Warner Bros. Discovery — will each own one-third of the venture, and they'll need to select a management team, branding and pricing. The new service is expected to launch later this year and be available through a new app, built by a team that will be separate from the management leaders at the three companies. The service will include content from linear TV networks housed by the three companies, which include ESPN, ABC, TNT and Fox, among others. Live sporting events are the only type of content left that's holding the cable bundle together. It's Tracker Tuesday! With sports streaming becoming increasingly fragmented, consumers are frustrated. In a recent Deloitte survey of sports fans, 30% said they paid for a subscription service to watch a sporting event but nearly half said they had missed a game because they didn’t have the right streaming service; 44% said they had to subscribe to too many services to watch sports; 59% said they would pay extra for a streaming video service that had all of the sports they want to watch in one place (70% for Gen Z; 80% for Millennials). #SportsStreaming #OpenVault #TrackerTuesday #broadbandindustryanalytics

Still riding that Super Bowl high? Paramount+, which had the exclusive streaming rights, saw record triple-digit WoW growth during the week of Feb 5th, with a 141% increase in downloads and up 18% for weekly active users. Similarly, YoutubeTV and Fubo, whom carried the big game live via CBS, saw an 87% and 32% increase in downloads, respectively. And, not about to waste this opportunity, Paramount aggressively upped it's US ad spend blanketing channels - Facebook (+255%), Instagram (+230%), Snap Inc. (+177%), and TikTok (+130%) as well as significant increases in Mobile Video, Desktop Display and OTT. We have passed the tipping point. #LinearTV & FTA channels should now be considered as the supporting channel, and along side any channel plans for the networks #streaming play.  Usage and viewership of cable and broadcast falling below 50% in terms of total share among US viewers - a FIRST for linear TV viewing, and with streaming usage skyrocketing 25% in the past year, the trend will continue. Original scripted #content on linear TV is also struggling due to macro-economic factors, and the competitive market place enticing advertisers, which means the networks are banking on their content and screening 'safe bets' for advertising revenue. #SportsRights are burgeoning, because appointment viewing is necessary for eyeballs and advertising, and wider distribution means that networks have additional channels to drive revenue. The problem is when you pay for the sports rights and can't get the eye balls. Cue Nine and the #Olympics. With 2024 France on the horizon, and milestone events like the 100m finals taking place sometime between 4-5am AEST, the challenge for Nine is selling the eyeballs, when they (likely) won't be there.
