In celebration of International Women's Day, we've been speaking to some of the amazing women who work at Viridor and asking them about their roles, ambitions and ways to improve things for them in their everyday work. Correctly fitting PPE and more flexible working are two areas that we are actively working on for women in the business. We are currently looking to find the best fitting PPE out there. Our latest PPE comes in a wide range of men's and women's sizes and styles, which is a step in the right direction, but we know we can still do better and are looking at even more ways to find PPE to fit every shape and size. We have also taken onboard comments about women predominately taking on the role as primary carer outside of work. We realise there is a greater need for flexible working patterns and our flexible working policy is in place for anyone who has passed their probation. Other suggestions from the women in our Viridor team include leadership development programmes designed especially for women and creating a network of women across Viridor who can support and mentor each other - great ideas that we will look at progressing soon. We recognise we have a long way to go to hit our diversity targets, but we are actively encouraging more women to join us, often through apprenticeships and graduate training programmes. Things are definitely changing and we love seeing so many more girls taking STEM subjects and considering engineering as a career. Wiltshire bound after a FANTASTIC few days in Sheffield presenting and listening at the LGcomms Academy Conference with my incredible team of Young Consultants Anya, Azisa and Andrew, on behalf of Participation People. I always think of the wise words of Heather Salmon when at events like these and the planning techniques Fiona Pelham taught me, which are: -> "We change the world one conversation at a time." -> "Plan how you want to leave people feeling from the outset." I wanted to share my top 5 learning Take Away's, hoping to inspire new thinking, fresh perspectives and a positive challenge to strengthening how the Public Sector engages with young people. Here they are: 1️⃣ Youth Involvement in Decision-Making: Empower young people as Public Sector Champions and Influencers. Involve them in discussions about regeneration to shift the power paradigm from design onwards. Traditional Youth Councils may need reevaluation to stay relevant with this digitally savvy group! 2️⃣ 24/7 Culture and Digital Engagement: Explore the impact of the "always-on" culture for you and your team. Adapt communication strategies to compete effectively with digital traffic and when young people are available. Consider using videos as a consolidated platform for Gen Z engagement. 3️⃣ Youth-Friendly Governance: Translate committee papers and governance structures into youth-friendly formats, embracing an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) perspective. Ask young people to sense check and youth-proof your lingo as part of your quality assurance checks. 4️⃣ Critical Awareness and Relationship Building: Encourage the development of critical awareness skills within communication teams and establish routine relationship building between young people and executive leadership for better service delivery. 5️⃣ Youth-Proofing and Tailored Communication: Prioritise youth-proofing language and content. Tailor communications to young people's interests and passions, addressing the challenges of cutting through digital noise and scams.
