I recently had the honor of giving the commencement address at my high school. I started high school during California’s Prop 8 era. I was told I was going to hell by people I was close to and I was eventually outed. High school me would be gobsmacked about where we are today and by how much more there is to go. In my speech, I spoke about anxiety and told the Class of 2024 what I wanted to hear when I was their age: I’m proud of you and everything’s going to be ok. While that advice isn’t always easy to give or receive, I’m comforted by the knowledge that sometimes the first step towards any goal is saying it out loud. So happy Pride! And in case you need to hear it, I’m proud of you and everything’s going to be ok.
Just love this AJ. And as someone who knows your work, I just want to say that I am proud of YOU!
And in case you need to hear it, we are so proud of you, and thank you for sharing your message with our graduates. It was a transformational speech. Although my daughter graduated previously, she was in the audience to support her friends and soaked up every word. Turn your anxiety into excitement. That's a message we can all use. Happy pride month!
Not me tearing up.. They're lucky to have you + just imagine if we had all been told that.
The honor was ours, having you back to give the commencement address! The Class of 2024 was lucky to have you share that incredibly honest, heartfelt, and important message. Webb is better because you are part of its community 💙
Happy Pride!!! This is wonderful — congrats AJ!
Great to see!
What a great experience! And really just the words everyone needs to hear!
Beautiful, AJ! Celebrating your message, your accomplishments, and you.
I love that you got to do this! So rewarding for you and so inspiring for the students who needed to hear what you had to say. High school was torturous for me as a gay person. But I think being gay saved me. I knew I had to leave the town I grew up in to have the life I wanted.
