In my line of work, I talk to a lot of different people, and recently, two conversations really stuck with me: One guy in his early 30s has a steady government job but wants more. He's spent two years studying UI/UX because he wants to move into the corporate world where he can work on interesting projects and make more money. His friends think he's making a mistake leaving his stable job, but he's decided to go for it. Then there's another guy who's 26 and works at a big internet company. He earns good money, but he's tired of the long hours and office politics. For the past three years, he's been studying for government exams because he wants a job that's more secure and lets him have a better work-life balance, even if it means earning less. Here’s what I learned from these two conversations: First, follow your gut. People might not understand why you want certain things in life, and that's okay as long as it makes sense to you. Second, the grass isn’t always greener. What appears better isn't always the best choice.

As I countdown the final 31 days of 2023, I find myself in a reflective state. Here are some things I want to focus on as the year comes to a close: ❄️ Rest during the Holidays: Job hunting and contract work can be overwhelming. For the rest of the month, I'm dedicating extra time to restoring my energy. For me that looks like making holiday cards, preparing food for potlucks, and celebrating with close friends and family. 📝 Resetting My Goals: Originally aiming for a product design role, I find myself partially there as a contractor. Now, my focus has shifted to learning about design-related topics that truly excite me! Recently, I've been exploring color theory applied to dashboards and delving into design systems for smoother dev implementation and consistent UI. (Links to these resources in the comments) 🌟 Embracing Every Day: Just because the year is ending doesn't mean my time is up. Every day, regardless of the new year, is an opportunity to discover inspiring companies making impactful contributions. It's a chance to connect with incredible people in the industry who genuinely want to help me grow. This isn't the end, it's only the beginning. . . I'm not claiming perfection or that every day will be flawless. But my hope is that these goals will help guide me and give me purpose. Regardless of where you are in your life's journey, I wish everyone a restorative holiday season and the prospect of hope for a bright new year. ✨ #Reflecting #Goals #NewBeginnings #happyholidays #positivethinking

Sharing my journey: For the past two years, I found myself in a relentless cycle of applying for jobs every single day, joining UX Designer bootcamps, and learning new skills. While there's nothing wrong with being a newcomer in the tech field, I became a prisoner to the pursuit of a high salary rather than being appreciative of the journey. It dawned on me that my focus had shifted from quality to quantity; I was creating projects without seeking constructive criticism and prematurely abandoning them because they didn't bring immediate financial success. I was spiraling, fueled by the fear of being in my late twenties without a clear career path and haunted by societal stigmas. My mind felt empty, except for the constant job applications, which only intensified my self-doubt upon receiving rejections. In this journey, I've learned that each of us treads a unique path. We encounter different people, absorb diverse energies, and navigate through different environments. The real goal is to savor the process, and the first step is getting to know oneself. Understanding who you are, what you tolerate, what you deserve, and what truly ignites your passion is crucial. Every day, strive to live intentionally. One step back, two steps forward. #mentalhealth #LetsBeGreat #mentalhealthawareness #BreakingStigmas

A job search is a weird full time job. Yes, it's a marathon. But it's a marathon comprised of several brief sprints in between life. As week 8 of my job search ends, here's what my routine looks like: 1- Apply apply apply 📝 2- Playtime with my son. 👨👦 3- Naptime for my son 😴 4- Brief job search + app session 📝 5- Online UI/UX coursework 🤓 6- Rest 😴 7- Home stuff 🧺 8- More playtime with son 👨👦 And around 8pm, I continue the job search for another hour, and save positions to apply to first thing next morning. This works for me, because even though finding a job is my new full time job, I will not sacrifice my family life. This means that if kiddo wants to play, needs a diaper change, or wants a snack, the job search and app sessions are paused. Find what works for you. You've got this, and we all will get through this.

If you're on the job hunt right now, check out some helpful tips from Dale Husband!
As many of you know, I'm unemployed and on the look out for new opportunities 🔎 😒 as many of you are too! Mentally it can be draining, but what am I doing to stay sane? 😵 Well here are my self-help tools and maybe some of them you can resonate with too 🙏 : Stay busy 📚: Going from a day job to nothing can be the hardest realization of the situation you find yourself in. You start overthinking, wondering if you'll ever get back to what you love doing. One way to reduce the time spent overthinking and worrying - use it as an opportunity to upskill in an area you feel you're lacking or get volunteering and helping a good cause 💪 either way, it's a win-win. Family time ❤️: All those days and hours spent locked up in your office or at work? That's gone now 😁 Use the free time to bond with family and take advantage of these moments to recharge, rather than worry. Before you know it, you'll be back trying to search out time to be with them again 🤗 Keep a schedule 📝: If you're anything like me, you'll work in spikes of energy or enthusiasm 😅 Though, that can be less productive and when you're on the job hunt, you might lose motivation or burn out quite quickly if you spend endless hours job searching. Set aside 2 or 3 hours a day, or whatever you prefer and when that time's up - do something else and forget about the job hunting. You'll find you do more in those few, intense but productive hours, than you would mindlessly scrolling and applying for jobs while you'll slowly lose motivation. These may or may not work for you - but whatever does work for you, remember to not forget yourself or your own mental wellbeing. Without it, you'll not be who you need to be for the one's who love you ❤️ 🤗 My DM's are always open if anyone needs support or mentoring if you're new to UX Research and on the job hunt too 🎒 #uxjobs #ux #uxjob #userexperience #uxadvice #careeradvice #career #uxr #uxresearch #userexperienceresearch

This year has been a rough year career-wise. I've been stuck in a place where I can survive financially but am unable to climb the ladder to make a larger difference. I got content with waiting for something to fall in my lap. But after a swift mental reset, I'm back actively seeking out my dream career. It's going to be a long four months while I'm setting myself up for another big step in the right direction. No more complaining about why I can't get into companies. No more being jealous of my peers for their personal successes. It's time to lift up my friends, colleagues, and partners. I have a lot of work to do before I'm ready to re-release my website and current projects. But this determination inside to succeed can't be quenched. The hard work that I put in for the next few months will really test my passion for UI/UX and Game Design. However, I have taken a lot of difficult routes in my academic and professional career. After realizing that money wasn't the thing to make my life better. And I didn't want to waste my time with a company that I didn't believe in. I have left good jobs and forged many relationships that hold strong from my time in different disciplines. Surviving has always been my main goal. Find a job to pay the bills and use your free time for growth. Survival has been secured so it's time to really put my best foot forward. It's time to show the rest of the world what happens when I can put my all into my passion rather than my survival. So be on the lookout for polish, persistence, and confidence. And for everyone who has hyped me up about myself since the beginning, thank you, and enjoy the ride. Let's do this. #confidence #uiux #passion #persistence

If you only have 1 pillar, you need to find a new job. Have all 3? Welcome to work nirvana. When I started working for Mike Mischel on a project in Miami, I quickly realized this might be as good as it gets, so I broke down why into three pillars: 1️⃣ The work - we were solving hard UX and technical problems every day, building a new paradigm for how people vacation. 2️⃣ The people - I was learning from some of the smartest people I had ever met and alongside a team of people I still consider some of my best friends today (s/o Albert Chiang, Ross Farquharson and Skylar Lyon) 3️⃣ The lifestyle it affords you- There’s not much more a broke, recent grad could ask for than expense-paid flights and hotel points. While my situation has changed, the framework still holds true. When you have all 3, flow states are common and you are excited to work hard. When you have 2, it's golden handcuffs (especially if one of those is the lifestyle). If you only have 1 - you need to evaluate your situation. Life is too short to only have 1. I am fortunate that I can say I am back at 3, shipping products for our awesome clients at Fullsend. I would LOVE to hear if someone can poke holes or has a similar framework they use.

Ever experienced a life-altering decision that flipped your world upside down? Let me share my tale... In my case, it began with lending a hand to refugees during my college years. Their two special needs children ignited my journey to become a teacher. But then came the cruel burnout and a less-than-ideal salary that stung even harder. Enter the pandemic, a time when I decided to merge my empathy and creativity to forge a new career in UX design. The fancy tech job came next but brought immense depression. Why? I was shut behind a screen all day, devoid of any human connection. Then, a friend requested a website redesign. It not only won an award but injected joy back into my life. From revamping pitch decks to media kits, I soon realized that I was no longer deeply sad. The secret ingredient? The tenacious pursuit of meaningful, one-on-one connections; the genuine desire to help. Every decision you take, no matter how insignificant it appears, can shift the trajectory of your life. So tell me, what was your life-altering decision that created a ripple effect and steered you down an uncharted course?

The knowledge gap in applying to jobs: Having 2 communities, employers & job seekers, completely unaware of the tools the other has to use when posting or expressing interest in a job... It is that lack of communication and knowledge of the other's UI/UX that drives much of the content on LinkedIn, filled with aggression, confusion, anxiety, or anger towards the other community. Complaints? They solve nothing. Confused or Angry? Try using the website from the other side of the table. No one "gets in trouble" and it builds understanding. Understanding is key. To understand, one must abandon all desire to escalate. And start asking questions. That requires talking to people.

💼🚶♂️3 reasons why you'd quit a UX design job 1️⃣ Value clash! 😤👥 When companies prioritize aesthetics over real user needs and feedback, frustration kicks in! 2️⃣ No room to bloom! 🌱📚 Designers say bye bye when they feel: • Stuck 🌀 • Unsupported 😔 • Left without resources to learn 😩 3️⃣ Not feeling the love! 💔💔 It's not just about the moolah. Designers yearn to work where: • Their talent shines bright ✨ • Their contributions are celebrated 👏 • They have a seat at the decision-making table 📝✔️ Dear all employers out there: Retaining stellar UX talent calls for more than competitive salaries! It's about building a thriving culture! 😃 It's about fostering growth! 🌱📈 But most crucially, it's about giving respect! 🤝 What would you add? ✍️ P.S. Tag 1-3 people everyone should follow! Thank you.

3wWell said, Abhishek. Two ends of a continuum, indeed. Here’s the thing I guess, people often outgrow their own selves and hence it shows in their choices too - be it professional or personal.
