SOCIAL IMPACT ENTREPRENEURS: BETTER COOPERATION I went to a local chamber of commerce meeting the other day to discuss post-COVID workfoce development. I learned how to cheat. When I tried to offer some suggestions for more effective leadership in the area of early career development, I was shut down. When business puts PROFITS over PEOPLE, everyone loses. In contrast, healthy people from healthy families will make more money to spend it on the things you sell. Less to many maybe more for you. But that is NOT desireable or sustainable. Here is what what I was trying to say but was powerless to say: The Vision of 360 Wellness Solutions is that every child lives in a happy, healthy home. We provide consultation and support to State and Federal government agencies, medical groups, social services agencies, or non-profit organizations that share our mission to provide healthcare, housing, economic opportunity, and safety to mothers & children, veterans, and seniors, globally. We believe that the world is a global community where the health of our natural and human resources is the greatest gift we can give ourselves and each other. Pay it foward. I'm having a hard time reconciling economic reports this week about the "booming US economy thanks to consumers who opened up their wallets" in comparison to hundreds of comments I received this week from nonprofit professionals stating that, "donors can't give money if they have no money to give". Knowledge is power. This week, I had the opportunity to present highlights from the Generosity Crisis with Brian Crimmins to several thousand nonprofit professionals, painting the stark reality of how individuals are systemically 'opting-out' from giving to traditional nonprofit organizations. Envisioning a new reality. While it's important to know the facts and philosophies of why the decline exists, it's more beneficial to discuss innovations and opportunities to imagine a new reality. In our case, it's a 'less is more' approach to align incentives that focus on increasing lifetime value by deepening relationships. What's the rub? The part I'm flummoxed by, is that throughout our presentations this week, we heard (repeatedly) that the challenge with fundraising today is that; "if people don't have money, how can they give it away?" But here's the deal... before Carnegie and Rockefeller, charitable giving in our country was founded by people with little money, but an inherent responsibility to helping others. It wasn't about money. It was about connection. I'm not saying that inflation isn't real or that caring for the wellbeing of your family shouldn't be your #1 priority. It's a matter of priorities. Like the article below, how do we explain that June 30, 2023 became the busiest day in US aviation history, or that the passport office is processing 500,000 applications a week (30-40% higher than average), or that bookings for cruises are at an all time high? Or even more, how do we explain why 55% of those who stopped giving say they don’t earn enough to afford donating to charity? Changing the narrative to one of abundance. Personally, I believe the scarcity narrative exasperates one of the biggest issues facing nonprofits today. The drumbeat that "people can't give if they don't have money too give" reinforces the incorrect notion that philanthropy is about money. This scarcity mindset is debilitating the nonprofit professional and supporting an incorrect hypothesis that philanthropy is about money in the first place. The truth is a tough pill to swallow. No doubt that blaming the economy is easier than admitting that nonprofits are losing the war on trust, are slow to articulate true impact and in many cases, have become a barrier to generosity, rather than an amplifier of it. Something to think about. We must stop allowing the narrative of scarcity to hold us back from forging bonds with individuals that are unified by the need, desire and impact.
