QinetiQ Australia Sector Chief Operating Officer Paul Angelatos recently delivered an insightful speech to 150 delegates and The Hon. Member for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips MP, at the #i3netDefenceTechForum in Kiama about Defence’s mission, and how we as industry must respond through our own purposeful activity.
Key takeaways:
– Changing defence environment changing the mission: The Australian Government has shifted its strategy of 'Deter and Defeat' to 'Deterrence by Denial’. As threats rapidly evolve, the urgency to accelerate these advancements from the lab to the warfighter has never been greater. There is critical need for integrating traditional defence platforms with low-cost, autonomous maritime systems to enhance our joint force capabilities.
– Evolving role of Test and Evaluation: The Test and Evaluation (T&E) of Australia’s defence capabilities must be incorporated at the beginning of the life cycle in mission engineering, and then right across the entire capability life cycle. The goal should be to create a Test and Evaluation Enterprise that not only evaluates an integrated joint force but helps define it.
– Accelerating capability to the frontline: At QinetiQ Australia, we think about the changing mission that Defence is charged with responding to and how we can do things better to introduce capability faster. We employee more than 240 practitioners in Test and Evaluation in Australia, and we are resourcing up – with the aim to train hundreds more with hands on-experience so that we have the best and most highly skilled people to support the Australian Defence Force.
– Australian capability: The opportunity is real for defence industry in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven region. The technology and expertise in the room must be captured to support Defence success while providing economic benefits locally.
