Following on from Earth Day last week, I wanted to discuss sustainability and how imperative it is for every business, regardless of industry. Companies focusing on sustainability are seeing improvements to their retention, cost reduction and compliance with regulations. However, while there is no denying the benefits of sustainability within businesses, the vast majority of organisations are not reaching their sustainability goals. Whether that's because of poor technology implementation, skill gaps within the team or inadequate internal reporting of sustainability. From some Software AG research released last year, 82% of companies admit that they would rather accept regulatory penalties in order to avoid taking on sustainability initiatives and a further 84% admitted to prioritising commercial success over sustainable success. To ramp up sustainability efforts, businesses need everyone on board, from top tier management to the smaller departments, to build a strong understanding of sustainability throughout the organisation. #Sustainability #EarthDay #Industry #Environment #ThoughtLeader #Business

We are proud to be the secretariat for the environmental sustainability concordat for the research and innovation sector! Charlotte Bonner, EAUC's CEO, says: “Our sector’s place in the journey to net-zero is so much greater than our carbon footprint. Through groundbreaking research and innovation, the UK post-16 education sector pioneers sustainable solutions across various fields, driving forward technological advancements, developing our knowledge and creating tools essential for achieving our sustainability objectives. But sustainable research and innovation isn’t just about what we’re researching and developing to achieve maximum positive impacts, but how we do so with minimum negative impact on people and planet. This is why this concordat is needed and a very much welcome addition to the sustainability landscape for our sector. By providing the secretariat function for the concordat, EAUC seeks to contribute to its success as well as align action undertaken by signatories with existing sustainability activity taking place across the sector.” #esconcordat Wellcome Trust

Let's talk sustainability. You often hear of commitments to the UN Sustainable Development Goals but what does that mean in practice? Well at Jisc we are proud to present our first ever annual sustainability report. This is a new report that allows you to see all that we are doing to achieve net zero across our operational emissions by 2040, ten years ahead of national target. Jisc’s sustainability strategy has developed in the last year. We are taking a new holistic view of sustainability using the Sustainable Development Goals as a format to align ourselves with the sector. The new approach looks at member-facing activity, climate action, wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, governance and ethics. #UNSustainableDevelopmentGoals #Sustainability #furthereducation #highereducation #research https://lnkd.in/eP_i7dyc

𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐒 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩: 👉 Sustainability is an ongoing journey, and we accept the need for continuity despite the ever-changing external circumstances faced by companies. 👉 Over the past few years, we have gained valuable experience in implementing sustainability measures, and our sustainability programme had been in place for several years with minor adjustments to accommodate changing circumstances. However, our main direction has remained. 🌲 Our progress has been significant, and we have successfully fulfilled most of our voluntary commitments. Alongside the measures already implemented, we have introduced new initiatives for 2023 to align with the reporting requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. 🌲 While we have been voluntarily reporting as a best practice and to meet stakeholder demands, we will be required to report starting from the 2025 financial year. To ensure a seamless transition, we will start with a comprehensive GAP analysis to evaluate our current position. 🌲 Our primary focus will involve reviewing our materiality analysis and conducting a climate risk analysis. We will also establish a more structured data collection process and assess our activities according to the EU taxonomy regulation, to determine what qualifies as truly sustainable. It is unfortunate that, despite its contribution to climate-friendly construction, sawmilling is not yet recognised as an eligible activity. 🌲 As part of our commitment to being a truly sustainable business, we are reaffirming significant self-commitments: + By 2025, our aim is to source all wood from certified forests and avoid sourcing from National Parks in Romania and Ukraine. + Furthermore, we will persist in our efforts to further reduce our carbon footprint. + In line with our approach from last year, we will connect our goals with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure that our material issues align with this international framework.
